Medical Assistant Job Overview

Capital Area Pulmonary Associates is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Medical Assistant to join our growing pulmonary and sleep medicine practice. In this role, you will work alongside physicians and advanced practice providers to deliver exceptional patient care while supporting the daily operations of our busy outpatient clinic. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume medical office. Duties

  • Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare them for their appointments.

  • Obtain and document vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate.

  • Accurately collect and document patient medical history, medications, allergies, and chief complaints in the electronic health record (EHR).

  • Prepare patient charts and ensure all required documentation is complete prior to provider visits.

  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during examinations and in-office procedures.

  • Perform Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) according to office protocols.

  • Perform and document Six-Minute Walk Tests.

  • Administer injections, breathing treatments, and other clinical procedures within the scope of practice.

  • Process prescription refill requests, referrals, and other clinical documentation as directed by the provider.

  • Assist with obtaining and processing prior authorizations, with training provided.

  • Answer incoming phone calls and assist patients with clinical questions, prescription requests, test results, and other patient care needs.

  • Return patient phone calls and communicate provider recommendations accurately and professionally.

  • Maintain accurate documentation within the electronic health record.

  • Clean, disinfect, and restock exam rooms and maintain clinical supplies.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

  • Communicate effectively with physicians, providers, staff, pharmacies, hospitals, and patients to ensure continuity of care.

  • Perform additional clinical duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of Medical Assistant experience required.

  • Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent) is preferred but not required.

  • Experience using electronic health records (EHR); Athenahealth experience is a plus.

  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and clinical documentation.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a healthcare team.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume medical office while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.

  • Professional, dependable, and patient-focused attitude.

  • Knowledge of pulmonary and sleep medicine is a plus but not required.
