The Medical (Science) Director at Genentech puts patients and science at the center of all actions. They drive tactics aimed at maximizing medical progress for patients. They collaborate to drive timely data generation and dissemination. They are expected to maintain an in-depth understanding of the medical strategy and relevant clinical and payer issues, while ensuring Genentech's partners understand key trends and shifts in the external healthcare landscape. They serve as the guardian for high standards of compliance, ethics and safety. This role is organized within a network of experts, and therefore may be performing a variety of medical activities, as needed.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a dynamic Medical (Science) Director to join the US Medical Immunology (Rheumatology-Nephrology) Medical Network, supporting the portfolio for rheumatological and immune-mediated kidney diseases. The Medical (Science) Director will provide exceptional clinical and scientific leadership for medical affairs activities, aiming to generate and communicate medical evidence that aids practitioners, patients, and payers in making informed health care decisions. The successful candidate exhibits outstanding communication and leadership skills and builds strong relationships with key stakeholders.

This position will represent the US Medical function within cross-functional teams and initiatives at Genentech, within the Roche global organization, and in external customer-facing engagements. This position requires the ability to own fit-for-purpose tactics in a matrix environment, flexibility in prioritizing work, and a mindset to engage in purposeful partnerships to solve complex multi-disciplinary challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide the medical perspective to a network of medical affairs professionals and cross functional teams in the home office and field organizations

  • Design medical strategies spanning the product lifecycle

  • Execute efficient implementation of medical tactics, leveraging relevant expertise, insights, advanced analytics, and digital platforms

  • Develop partnerships and conduct scientific exchange with external stakeholders across the healthcare landscape, including therapeutic area experts and medical societies, and execute on collaborations

  • Represent Genentech externally at key meetings

  • Lead congress and publication planning, as well as medical/scientific content communications and review

  • Design and manage data generation activities, including clinical studies and real-world evidence conducted as part of medical affairs

  • Spearhead medical launch strategy, aligning clinical evidence, medical communication, and external stakeholder engagement to ensure launch readiness and excellence in execution

Who You Are

Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced clinical/science degree (e.g., PharmD, PhD, MD)

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant clinical/medical pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry experience

  • Proven record in developing strong relationships with external stakeholders (e.g., therapeutic area experts, external organizations)

  • Understanding of the US health care environment, including the payer landscape, marketplace factors/dynamics, and evidence-based medicine tools and practices

  • Ability to navigate complex and challenging situations and flex and thrive in an ambiguous environment

  • Highly collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills; can effectively and quickly establish rapport and influence without authority

Preferred Experience

  • MD degree

  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in rheumatology or nephrology; direct experience as a practicing physician is highly desirable

Travel Requirements

The position is located in South San Francisco, CA. The position may require up to 35% time traveling.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $173,200 - 433,600. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
