Job description

The Director Medical Training is a highly visible enterprise leader who will shape how Medical teams across the full US BBBU portfolio build and apply the scientific and clinical capabilities needed to deliver meaningful impact for patients and healthcare systems. This role owns the end-to-end clinical learning strategy and execution for Medical HQ and field teams, creating an integrated learning ecosystem that accelerates launch and lifecycle readiness, strengthens scientific expertise and Medical capabilities, and elevates the quality of external scientific engagement across therapy areas. Working with Medical leaders and cross-functional stakeholders, the Director will translate US Medical strategy, portfolio priorities, global standards, and regulatory requirements into scalable learning experiences that enable teams to turn science, evidence, and insights into action. Reporting to the Head of Medical Excellence, this individual will have a pivotal opportunity to define the future of clinical learning across BBU Medical and strengthen the readiness and effectiveness of teams across the portfolio.
Accountabilities
  • Define and own the multi-year clinical learning strategy for Medical across the full BBU portfolio, covering onboarding, role-based capability development, launch and lifecycle readiness, team learning and effectiveness, compliance certification, field coaching and continuous learning.

  • Own the development, implementation, and ongoing assessment of a consistent field coaching approach, equipping Medical leaders and people managers with the tools, standards, and insights needed to strengthen capability, reinforce learning, and improve field performance.

  • Build an integrated portfolio learning roadmap that balances enterprise-wide standards with therapy-area, asset, and role-specific needs across HQ and field Medical teams.

  • Lead learning-needs assessments and capability-gap analyses using Medical strategy, portfolio milestones, learner feedback, performance data, and evolving scientific and healthcare-system needs.

  • Design and oversee competency-based curricula that integrate disease-state knowledge, product and pipeline science, clinical evidence, treatment guidelines, evidence literacy, scientific narratives, insight generation, digital engagement, and Medical ways of working.

  • Own clinical learning readiness for launches and major lifecycle milestones, from requirements definition and content development through assessments, certification, reinforcement, and measurement.

  • Establish consistent onboarding and first-90-day learning experiences for Medical roles, with clear proficiency expectations and pathways for ongoing role-specific development.

  • Set learning standards for high-quality, compliant scientific exchange and external engagement, including appropriate preparation for field and HQ Medical interactions.

  • Determine and manage the optimal mix of instructor-led, virtual, digital, simulation-based, social, and microlearning approaches to improve proficiency, retention, and application.

  • Ensure all learning content is scientifically accurate, balanced, current, and compliant with applicable medical, legal, regulatory, and internal standards; maintain audit-ready governance and documentation.

  • Partner with Medical leadership, therapy-area teams, Field Medical, Medical Excellence, Scientific Communications, Evidence, Digital, Compliance, Regulatory, Global Medical, and other relevant functions to align priorities and coordinate delivery.

  • Lead the governance, prioritization, and demand-planning process for Medical learning across the portfolio, clarifying decision rights, timelines, resource needs, and dependencies.

  • Define success measures and dashboards, including proficiency, completion and certification, time-to-readiness, learner confidence, application, and Medical-impact indicators; use insights to continuously improve solutions.

  • Drive adoption of learning platforms, content-management systems, Medical technologies, and analytics tools that improve access, scalability, personalization, and measurement.

  • Lead change management and communications for major learning initiatives, equipping Medical leaders and people managers to reinforce learning and coach for sustained application.

  • Manage budgets, vendors, agencies, and technology partners to deliver high-quality learning solutions on time and within agreed resources.

  • Build reusable standards, playbooks, and communities of practice that enable sharing across therapy areas, reduce duplication, and scale effective approaches across BBU Medical.

Essential Skills/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in life sciences, healthcare, education, organizational development, or a related field.

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in Medical Affairs, field medical, medical education, clinical learning, scientific training, or learning and development within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or healthcare sector.

  • Demonstrated success developing and deploying competency-based clinical or scientific learning programs at scale across multiple brands, assets, therapy areas, or Medical roles.

  • Experience leading learning strategy and readiness for product launches, indication expansions, and lifecycle milestones in a regulated environment.

  • Strong scientific and clinical acumen, with the ability to translate complex evidence, data, and medical strategy into clear, practical, and engaging learning experiences.

  • Knowledge of Medical Affairs operating models, field and HQ Medical roles, scientific exchange, insight generation, evidence dissemination, and applicable compliance requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence senior stakeholders within a complex, matrixed organization.

  • Experience establishing learning governance, assessments, certification or proficiency frameworks, and meaningful measures of learner readiness and impact.

  • Strong program and portfolio management skills, including prioritization, budget stewardship, vendor oversight, risk management, and delivery across multiple concurrent initiatives.

  • Excellent communication, facilitation, consulting, and change-leadership skills.

Desirable Skills/Experience
  • Advanced scientific, clinical, education, or business degree preferred (e.g., PharmD, PhD, MD, EdD, MS, MBA).

  • Experience across more than one therapeutic area and familiarity with a broad biopharmaceutical portfolio.

  • Prior experience supporting both field and HQ Medical populations, including MSL or other scientific-engagement roles.

  • Experience with adult-learning principles, instructional design, simulation, coaching, and modern assessment practices.

  • Familiarity with LMS/LXP platforms, content-authoring tools, virtual learning technologies, Medical systems, and analytics dashboards.

  • Track record of leading enterprise capability transformation, establishing common learning standards, or building a Medical learning operating model.

  • People leadership or significant matrix-team leadership experience.
