Mechatronics Engineer Robotics information

What is a mechatronics engineer robotics?

Mechatronics Engineer Robotics are professionals who design, develop, and maintain robotic systems by integrating principles from mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control engineering. They work on creating automated systems and smart machines that can perform tasks with minimal human intervention. Their role often involves programming robots, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and improving system efficiency in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and healthcare. The interdisciplinary nature of their work allows them to solve complex problems and innovate advanced robotic solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechatronics engineer robotics?

To thrive as a Mechatronics Engineer in Robotics, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, PLC programming, robotics simulation tools, and certifications like Certified Robotics Technician are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills ensure precise design, integration, and maintenance of advanced robotic systems, driving innovation and operational efficiency.

How do mechatronics engineers specializing in robotics typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams during a project?

Mechatronics Engineers in robotics often work closely with professionals from mechanical, electrical, and software engineering backgrounds. Collaboration is key, as projects require integrating hardware, sensors, control systems, and software to develop functional robotic solutions. Engineers regularly participate in team meetings, design reviews, and troubleshooting sessions, ensuring all components work seamlessly together. Effective communication and a willingness to bridge technical gaps between disciplines are essential for project success and career advancement in this dynamic field.

What is the difference between Mechatronics Engineer Robotics vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMechatronics Engineer RoboticsMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechatronics, Robotics, or related fields; certifications in automation or roboticsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; licensure varies by region
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, and testing robotic systems in labs or manufacturing settingsDesigning mechanical systems, machinery, and components across various industries
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, automation firms, manufacturing, research labsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design

Mechatronics Engineers Robotics focus on integrating electronics, control systems, and mechanical components to develop robotic systems, while Mechanical Engineers primarily design and analyze mechanical devices. Both roles require strong technical skills, but Mechatronics Engineers Robotics are more specialized in automation and robotics technology.

Job description

At ASI, we are revolutionizing industries with state-of-the-art autonomous robotics solutions. We deliver technologies that enhance safety, productivity, and efficiency. With our core values of Simplicity, Safety, Transparency, Humility, Attention to Detail and Growth guiding everything we do, we're shaping the future of automation in dynamic markets. As the Mechatronics Development Manager on the Commercial Landscaping team, you will direct the work of embedded software, mechanical and harness, electronics, and system engineers within landscaping applications to ensure the best practices around mechatronics system design and development. Your team owns the physical layer of autonomy on these machines: actuation of steering, drive, and cutting systems, sensor mounting and protection, wiring harnesses, and the electronics enclosures that hold it together. Because the equipment runs outdoors through grass, debris, moisture, and constant vibration, ruggedization and ease of service carry as much weight in your design reviews as raw performance. You will oversee your team's day-to-day responsibilities in designing, building, testing, deploying, maintaining, and supporting mechatronic systems and components that integrate mechanical, electrical, and software engineering principles. You will ensure that project and department milestones and goals are met while staying within approved budgets. Additionally, you will work to establish functional requirements, design specifications, and review solutions to ensure that organizational needs are met. ResponsibilitiesAct as a manager and mentor for engineers on policies, procedures, and technical issues related to mechanical, electrical, and software integration.Plan, direct, and coordinate the daily activities of the mechatronics development team supporting commercial landscaping platforms.Hold the team to industry best practices and ASI standards for mechatronics development, from concept through field support.Own integration across mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems so machines operate as one system rather than assembled parts.Evaluate designs for manufacturability, performance, cost, reliability, and serviceability in the field.Establish functional requirements and design specifications, then review proposed solutions against them.Partner with vehicle integration, autonomy software, and field teams to resolve issues found during commissioning and customer deployments.Track project scope, schedule, and budget, and escalate risk to leadership before it reaches the customer.Grow the engineers on your team through direct feedback, clear expectations, and deliberate assignment of work. Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.5 years of individual contributor experience as a Mechatronics Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Robotics Engineer, or other related engineering field.3+ years of experience managing teams of engineers in mechatronics development.Comprehensive knowledge of mechatronics principles, including mechanical design, electrical systems, control systems, and embedded software.Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools for mechanical design, such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and simulation software.Experience with embedded systems programming and software development, including proficiency in C, C++, or similar languages.Working knowledge of vehicle electrical architecture, wiring harness design, and Controller Area Network (CAN) based communication.Experience with Agile or other project management methodologies.Strong project management skills, particularly with complex cross-disciplinary projects.Strong communication skills, with the ability to work across engineering disciplines, field teams, and customers.Preferred experience working in Robotics, Automation, or a similar field with regards to the Landscaping industry. Physical RequirementsAbility to remain in a stationary position at a computer workstation for extended periods.Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity equipment continuously.Ability to communicate and exchange information in person, via phone, and through electronic means.Ability to traverse office, lab, shop, and field environments as required. At Autonomous Solutions, Inc. (ASI), we are committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace where all employees and applicants have equal opportunities. We prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other legally protected characteristic. ASI complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws regarding non-discrimination in employment and is dedicated to providing reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities throughout the hiring process.
