Job description

ASI is expanding its teams to support its current ramp-up across development work, customer projects, and product deployments. This is a full-time W-2 contract position. The selected candidate will interview with ASI and work as an integrated member of the ASI team. W-2 employment, payroll, and benefits will be administered through one of ASI's staffing partners. Development phases of this nature typically span up to project completion (typically 2-4 years), though scope and duration are driven by business needs.
JOB SUMMARY
The Mechanical Designer III supports the design, documentation, release, and integration of mechanical systems for ASI's autonomous container-handling platforms. This role creates and maintains 3D CAD models, mechanical drawings, assemblies, weldments, brackets, mounts, guards, covers, installation details, bills of materials, and related design documentation needed to build, test, and support autonomous reach stacker and yard truck systems.
As a Level III designer within ASI's five-level structure, this position independently owns moderately complex mechanical design and documentation assignments while receiving guidance on broader system architecture and high-level engineering decisions. The role works closely with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, systems engineers, technicians, manufacturing, test, and field teams to support vehicle integration, sensor mounting, autonomy-kit packaging, container-handling interfaces, and serviceable heavy-equipment designs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create, update, and maintain 3D CAD models, mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, weldment drawings, installation drawings, and fabrication documentation
  • Support mechanical design activities for autonomous reach stacker platforms, container stacker DC Build efforts, and Yard Truck Container Offload systems
  • Design and document brackets, mounts, frames, weldments, panels, covers, guards, enclosures, sensor mounts, compute mounts, cable-routing hardware, and integration components
  • Support mechanical integration of autonomy kits, sensors, compute hardware, electrical panels, wiring routes, antennas, cameras, LiDAR, radar, GPS/GNSS, and other vehicle systems
  • Develop mechanical designs that support container detection, container handling, yard truck interaction, offload workflows, vehicle alignment, service access, and field maintenance
  • Create and maintain bills of materials, part lists, drawing packages, revision records, and release documentation
  • Translate engineering concepts, sketches, redlines, markups, requirements, and field feedback into accurate design models and production-ready drawings
  • Review mechanical designs for fit, function, manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, durability, and integration with vehicle systems
  • Support packaging studies, interference checks, clearance reviews, installation planning, and layout work for heavy-equipment platforms
  • Support design of ruggedized components that can withstand vibration, shock, outdoor exposure, heavy-equipment operation, and field-service conditions
  • Incorporate feedback from prototype builds, shop integration, field testing, customer deployments, and technician installation work
  • Support engineering change requests, engineering change orders, drawing releases, and configuration-controlled design updates
  • Work with technicians, fabricators, vendors, and suppliers to resolve questions related to drawings, fit-up, fabrication, installation, and build quality
  • Support prototype assembly, vehicle integration, troubleshooting, and design updates in shop and field environments
  • Coordinate with electrical designers and engineers to ensure mechanical designs support wiring, harness routing, connector access, grounding, mounting, and service needs
  • Coordinate with systems, perception, GNC, test, and field teams to ensure mechanical designs support autonomous operation and validation activities
  • Maintain organized CAD files, drawings, BOMs, documentation records, and configuration-controlled design data
  • Participate in design reviews, build reviews, drawing reviews, and technical discussions related to mechanical system integration
  • Identify design risks, documentation gaps, fit issues, and serviceability concerns and communicate them clearly to the engineering team
  • Support customer deployments, field updates, or system reviews as required
