Mechanical System Engineer information

What does a mechanical system engineer do?

A Mechanical System Engineer designs, develops, and oversees the installation and maintenance of complex mechanical systems in various industries. Their work often involves integrating mechanical components with electrical and software systems to ensure the overall functionality and efficiency of machines or equipment. They may be responsible for tasks such as performing simulations, analyzing system performance, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Mechanical System Engineers play a critical role in industries like automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy. Their expertise ensures that mechanical systems operate safely, reliably, and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical system engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical System Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, system design, and problem-solving, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and industry certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) are often required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure efficient design, implementation, and maintenance of complex mechanical systems, leading to reliable project outcomes and innovation.

What are some common challenges mechanical system engineers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Mechanical System Engineers often collaborate closely with electrical, software, and civil engineers on multidisciplinary projects. A common challenge is ensuring effective communication between teams, as each discipline may use different technical language and have varying priorities. Managing integration issues and aligning timelines across departments can also be demanding. To overcome these challenges, Mechanical System Engineers typically participate in regular cross-functional meetings and use collaborative project management tools to ensure alignment and successful project delivery.

What is the difference between Mechanical System Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical System EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusDeveloping and integrating mechanical systems within larger projectsCreating detailed mechanical component and product designs
Work EnvironmentSystems integration, testing, and validation in manufacturing or engineering firmsDesign studios, CAD modeling, and prototype development
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, CAD certifications

Mechanical System Engineers focus on integrating and managing entire mechanical systems, while Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on designing specific components. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of product development and system integration.

Job description

What if you could redefine what's possible?

With us, you can. You want Purpose. Growth. Opportunity. People who get it.
We are the home of ambitious, passionate, and innovative world shapers.
With an unmatched breadth and depth of engineering, advisory and sciencebased expertise, our global minds unite to power local solutions.
We are pathfinders and impact makers.
We are Visioneers.
We are WSP.

The Opportunity

Build the future of industrial mechanical systems with us.
In this role, you will deepen your expertise as a technical specialist, contributing directly to the engineering that powers manufacturing, processing, and industrial facilities. You will focus exclusively on handson technical work - no project management, budgeting, or client administration - allowing you to apply advanced mechanical engineering judgment where it matters most: the integrity, performance, and reliability of industrial systems.

Your Impact

Perform detailed mechanical calculations for industrial equipment and systems, including stress analysis, heat transfer, ventilation, piping, rotating machinery, and reliability engineering.
Develop precise technical deliverables such as equipment specifications, P&IDs, mechanical datasheets, scoping documents, and design notes.
Model and analyze mechanical components and assemblies, selecting materials, mechanical tolerances, and design parameters aligned with industrial codes and standards.
Conduct equipment sizing (pumps, fans, compressors, heat exchangers, industrial HVAC units), ensuring safety, efficiency, and long-term durability.
Apply CSA, ASME, ANSI, NFPA, and other industrial standards to validate designs and ensure compliance across all deliverables.
Review and interpret laser scans, 3D models, and field measurements to support retrofit, upgrade, and brownfield engineering.
Perform root-cause analyses to resolve equipment failures and operational issues, proposing robust engineering solutions.
Prepare technical memos and engineering justification reports grounded in analytical methods and defensible engineering principles.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineers and CAD/REVIT designers, providing technical input without leading or managing project teams.
Support site investigations and equipment inspections, documenting findings for integration into design packages.

The Skills That Set You Apart

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and eligibility for P.Eng. with the OIQ.
  • 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience in industrial environments (manufacturing lines, heavy equipment, process systems, utilities, material handling).
  • Strong command of modeling and analysis tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, FEA tools, mechanical simulation software, or reliability analysis platforms.
  • Deep familiarity with industrial equipment - pumps, conveyors, blowers, pressure systems, mechanical drives, rotating and static equipment.
  • Strong understanding of asset integrity, maintenance engineering, failure modes, and lifecycle analysis.
  • Ability to translate complex technical problems into wellstructured engineering solutions.
  • Comfortable performing field verification, equipment assessments, and detailed technical walkthroughs in operational industrial environments.
  • Full professional proficiency in French
