What are some common challenges a mechanical integration engineer faces when coordinating with cross-functional teams during a project?

Mechanical Integration Engineers often work closely with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to ensure all components fit and function together seamlessly. One common challenge is aligning differing timelines, priorities, and technical requirements between teams, which can lead to integration delays or design conflicts. Strong communication and project management skills are crucial to proactively identify potential issues and facilitate effective collaboration. Being adaptable and solution-oriented helps in navigating these complexities to deliver a successful integrated product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical integration engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, systems integration, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or CATIA), product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and relevant industry certifications are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make a candidate stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring that complex mechanical systems are seamlessly integrated and function reliably within larger projects.

What is the difference between Mechanical Integration Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Integration EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusIntegrating mechanical components into systems, ensuring compatibility and functionalityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies from concepts
Skills & CertificationsCAD, system integration, testing, often requires engineering degreeCAD, design software, prototyping, often requires engineering degree
Work EnvironmentSystems integration labs, manufacturing facilities, cross-disciplinary teamsDesign studios, R&D labs, manufacturing settings
Industry UsageAerospace, automotive, robotics, where system integration is keyProduct development, consumer electronics, machinery design

While both roles require engineering backgrounds and CAD skills, Mechanical Integration Engineers focus on combining mechanical components into complete systems, ensuring they work seamlessly. Mechanical Design Engineers primarily develop individual components and assemblies. Both roles are essential in product development but differ in their core responsibilities and focus areas.

Systems Engineer - Modular Energetics Plant Integration

AT Process Technologies

Job description

AT Process Technologies (ATP) is a pioneering manufacturing company focused on the development and deployment of modular energetics production plants. Using breakthrough chemistry and automation that operates continuously and generates little to no waste, ATP is expanding energetics production to meet the munitions demands of the US and Allies safely, rapidly, and cost effectively.

Summary

ATP is building a core team of engineers to develop the autonomous skidded production systems that will redefine how energetics are manufactured. As our Systems Engineer, you will own the integration point between chemistry, process, mechanical, and controls — defining requirements, architecting how subsystems fit together, and making sure the whole system works as one, not just as a collection of parts. The ideal candidate has previously owned systems-level integration on a real hardware program end-to-end and brings the discipline to engineer for safety in a hazardous-chemistry environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own systems engineering for ATP's modular energetics production plants, from requirements definition through integration, verification, and commissioning

  • Translate process and chemistry requirements into system-level architecture, interface definitions, and technical specifications

  • Define and manage interfaces between mechanical, controls, process, and chemistry subsystems to ensure clean integration

  • Lead requirements traceability, ensuring design decisions map back to functional, safety, and performance requirements

  • Conduct system-level trade studies and risk analyses (FMEA, hazard analysis) across mechanical, electrical, and process domains

  • Develop and maintain system architecture diagrams, interface control documents (ICDs), and technical baselines

  • Coordinate design reviews across engineering disciplines, identifying integration risks before they reach the build

  • Support verification and validation planning, ensuring test coverage maps to system requirements

  • Lead or support hands-on integration, commissioning, and factory/site acceptance testing across subsystems

  • Drive root cause analysis on system-level anomalies that span multiple engineering disciplines

  • Collaborate with Process, Chemistry, Mechanical, and Controls engineers to keep the full system on schedule and within scope

  • Contribute to test plans, technical documentation, and engineering reviews

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline

  • 2+ years of professional experience in systems engineering, integration engineering, or a comparable cross-disciplinary technical role

  • Demonstrated experience owning systems-level integration end-to-end on real industrial or hardware programs

  • Strong grasp of engineering fundamentals across mechanical, process, and controls domains, with the ability to reason across disciplines

  • Experience with requirements management, interface control, and technical documentation practices

  • Ability to work hands-on in laboratory, fabrication, and plant environments

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work through ambiguity quickly and rigorously

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of relevant industry experience

  • Experience with systems engineering tools and methods (DOORS, MBSE, SysML, or equivalent)

  • Background in continuous process systems, batch processes, or other hazardous-chemistry environments

  • Experience integrating mechanical, controls, and process subsystems on a skidded or modular equipment program

  • Familiarity with safety and reliability standards (ISO 13849, IEC 61508, or similar)

  • Experience in defense, aerospace, energetics, or other regulated manufacturing environments

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs

  • U.S. Person and ability to obtain a security clearance

  • Ability to work on-site and travel as needed
