What are some common challenges a mechanical integration engineer faces when coordinating with cross-functional teams during a project?

Mechanical Integration Engineers often work closely with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to ensure all components fit and function together seamlessly. One common challenge is aligning differing timelines, priorities, and technical requirements between teams, which can lead to integration delays or design conflicts. Strong communication and project management skills are crucial to proactively identify potential issues and facilitate effective collaboration. Being adaptable and solution-oriented helps in navigating these complexities to deliver a successful integrated product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical integration engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, systems integration, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or CATIA), product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and relevant industry certifications are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make a candidate stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring that complex mechanical systems are seamlessly integrated and function reliably within larger projects.

What is the difference between Mechanical Integration Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Integration EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusIntegrating mechanical components into systems, ensuring compatibility and functionalityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies from concepts
Skills & CertificationsCAD, system integration, testing, often requires engineering degreeCAD, design software, prototyping, often requires engineering degree
Work EnvironmentSystems integration labs, manufacturing facilities, cross-disciplinary teamsDesign studios, R&D labs, manufacturing settings
Industry UsageAerospace, automotive, robotics, where system integration is keyProduct development, consumer electronics, machinery design

While both roles require engineering backgrounds and CAD skills, Mechanical Integration Engineers focus on combining mechanical components into complete systems, ensuring they work seamlessly. Mechanical Design Engineers primarily develop individual components and assemblies. Both roles are essential in product development but differ in their core responsibilities and focus areas.

Job description

Join a fast-growing, venture-backed robotics company that is transforming a legacy industry through advanced automation, robotics, and intelligent software. Backed by experienced founders and industry-leading investors, the company is rapidly moving from prototype to large-scale commercial deployments, building sophisticated robotic systems that solve complex real-world challenges.

This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of robotics, mechanical systems, software, and field operations. You'll play a critical role ensuring complex robotic platforms are successfully built, integrated, tested, deployed, and continuously improved in customer environments.

The Opportunity

We're looking for an Application Integration Engineer to bridge engineering development and real-world deployment. This is a highly hands-on role responsible for integrating robotic systems, supporting field deployments, troubleshooting complex electromechanical issues, and improving the tools and processes that enable scalable production.

The ideal candidate enjoys working directly with hardware, collaborating across engineering disciplines, and solving challenging problems that span software, electronics, mechanics, and customer operations.

Required Skills & Experience
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience integrating, configuring, or supporting complex electromechanical systems
  • Strong experience with mechanical assembly, electrical wiring, and systems integration
  • Experience troubleshooting hardware, electrical, and software issues using structured root cause analysis
  • Experience working with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Onshape, or equivalent
  • Comfortable working in Linux environments using command-line tools
  • Experience documenting technical procedures, build instructions, and troubleshooting guides
  • Strong understanding of engineering change processes and configuration management
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple engineering disciplines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in fast-paced engineering environments
  • Hands-on experience with automotive tire changing and wheel balancing equipment
Desired Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical discipline
  • Experience working in robotics, industrial automation, or manufacturing environments
  • Experience supporting startup or rapidly growing hardware organizations
  • Familiarity with robotic motion systems, sensors, actuators, and control hardware
  • Experience with 3D printing, machining, welding, or rapid prototyping
  • Experience creating technical training documentation and standard operating procedures
  • Military or technical service background involving vehicle or mechanical systems
  • Experience mentoring technicians and supporting production build activities
What You Will Be Doing
  • Own and maintain configuration libraries supporting multiple hardware platforms and vehicle variants
  • Validate system configurations and continuously improve deployment processes
  • Design and fabricate fixtures, tools, and prototype hardware that improve build quality and efficiency
  • Support mechanical prototyping through fabrication, assembly, and component selection
  • Assemble complete robotic systems including mechanical, electrical, and sensor subsystems
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineering teams to resolve integration challenges
  • Document engineering changes, recommend Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) improvements, and support continuous product refinement
  • Commission robotic systems at customer sites and support production deployments
  • Perform field diagnostics, collect operational data, and identify opportunities for product improvement
  • Train technicians and field personnel on build procedures, troubleshooting, and safe equipment operation
Tech Breakdown
  • 35% System Integration & Commissioning
  • 25% Mechanical & Electrical Assembly
  • 15% Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis
