Position Summary
Hela Spice Canada Inc. is seeking a motivated and mechanically inclined Industrial Mechanic Millwright Apprentice (433A) to join our maintenance team.
This entry-level position is intended for someone who has completed relevant mechanical or millwright schooling, a pre-apprenticeship program, or is currently registered as a first-year Industrial Mechanic Millwright apprentice.
Working under the supervision and guidance of experienced maintenance personnel, the apprentice will assist with the inspection, installation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of production, packaging and facility equipment. This position offers practical experience in a food-manufacturing environment and the opportunity to develop the skills required to become a licensed Industrial Mechanic Millwright.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist experienced maintenance personnel with preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs and equipment installations.
- Inspect production, batching and packaging equipment to help identify wear, damage or potential mechanical problems.
- Assist with diagnosing mechanical issues involving conveyors, bearings, belts, chains, sprockets, shafts, gearboxes, pumps, motors and other industrial components.
- Perform basic mechanical repairs and adjustments within the apprentice's level of training and authorization.
- Assist with dismantling, repairing, replacing, assembling and testing mechanical components.
- Support equipment installations, relocations, modifications and improvement projects.
- Assist with machinery alignment, levelling, adjustment and set-up.
- Participate in production-equipment changeovers and start-up checks when required.
- Lubricate machinery and replace worn or damaged components as directed.
- Learn to read and interpret equipment manuals, mechanical drawings, diagrams and manufacturer specifications.
- Use hand tools, power tools, measuring devices and maintenance equipment safely and correctly.
- Assist the maintenance team in responding to equipment breakdowns and production interruptions.
- Notify the Maintenance Supervisor of equipment conditions that could affect safety, food safety, product quality or production.
- Complete preventive-maintenance tasks and work orders accurately and on time.
- Record completed work, observations, parts used and follow-up requirements in the company's maintenance-management system.
- Assist with monitoring maintenance supplies, replacement parts and tool inventory.
- Maintain tools, maintenance areas and workspaces in a clean, safe and organized condition.
- Follow all company safety policies, including lockout/tagout, machine guarding and personal protective equipment requirements.
- Follow Good Manufacturing Practices, food-safety programs, allergen controls and sanitation requirements.
- Participate in apprenticeship, technical, safety and food-safety training.
- Perform other maintenance-related duties appropriate to the apprentice's education, experience and level of training.
Education and Apprenticeship Requirements
Candidates must meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Currently registered as a first-year Industrial Mechanic Millwright Apprentice (433A) in Ontario; or
- Completion of a relevant college certificate, diploma or pre-apprenticeship program, such as Mechanical Techniques - Industrial Millwright; Mechanical Technician - Industrial Maintenance; Industrial Mechanical Millwright; Electromechanical Engineering Technician; Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering Technician; or another recognized mechanical, maintenance or industrial program.
Candidates who have completed relevant schooling but are not yet registered as apprentices must be willing and eligible to register in Ontario's Industrial Mechanic Millwright 433A apprenticeship program.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical equipment, systems and components.
- Basic experience using hand tools, power tools and measuring devices.
- Hands-on mechanical, industrial, manufacturing or maintenance experience is an asset.
- Experience in food manufacturing, packaging or another regulated manufacturing environment is an asset.
- Basic welding, machining, fabrication, pneumatics or hydraulics knowledge is an asset.
- Ability to read basic mechanical drawings, diagrams and equipment manuals.
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn an electronic maintenance-management system.
- Ability to provide relevant educational transcripts, certificates or apprenticeship-registration documentation.
- Willingness to complete all workplace and classroom requirements associated with the apprenticeship program.

Physical and Working Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 20 kilograms.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, reach and work in different physical positions.
- Ability to climb stairs and use approved ladders or access equipment following required training.
- Comfortable working around operating industrial machinery.
- Comfortable working in areas with noise, spice dust, food allergens and varying temperatures.
- Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment.
- Willingness to work occasional overtime or adjusted hours to support scheduled maintenance, installations or equipment breakdowns.
Apprenticeship and Training Expectations
- Maintain active participation and good standing in the Industrial Mechanic Millwright 433A apprenticeship program once registered.
- Attend and successfully complete the required classroom training.
- Maintain apprenticeship records and obtain required workplace-training sign-offs.
- Work toward completing the competencies and hours required by Skilled Trades Ontario.
- Participate in company-provided safety, food-safety and technical training.
- Apply classroom learning safely and effectively in the workplace.
- Take increasing responsibility for maintenance tasks as skills, training and competency develop.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
The Millwright Apprentice must work within the limits of their training, experience and authorization. Tasks requiring additional qualifications, specialized training or experienced oversight must only be completed under the appropriate direction and supervision.
The apprentice is responsible for following all occupational health and safety policies; using required personal protective equipment; following lockout/tagout and machine-safety requirements; immediately reporting hazards, incidents, equipment damage and unsafe conditions; asking for assistance when requirements are unclear; stopping work that cannot be completed safely; and protecting anyone who may be affected by their work.
