Mechanical Engineering Intern | Long Island, NY

This posting is for Summer 2027 Internship opportunities.

IMEG is hiring a Mechanical Engineering Intern in Long Island, NY. Over 10-12 weeks, you'll assist in the analysis, design, and implementation oversight of mechanical systems for the vertical building industry while working closely with experienced engineers and consultants. You'll gain hands-on experience supporting real project work from day one.

In this role, you'll support work completed within project budgets, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and help meet project goals and client expectations. You'll contribute to projects serving government/municipal and science & technology clients while advancing high-performance, energy-efficient design aligned with MEP2050 and AIA2030.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with mechanical system design portions of projects according to code and IMEG standards.

  • Assist with researching commercially available equipment.

  • Assist with client relations, maintenance of the project design notebook, and documentation for permanent record files.

  • Assist with coordinating design and schedule with other disciplines, including architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical, and equipment suppliers.

  • Assist with documenting design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while monitoring project design progress.

  • Assist with reviewing project documents for accuracy and completeness prior to requesting a final check.

  • Assist with preparing and issuing addendum information.

  • Conduct periodic job site observations and other services as required by the contract services agreement.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent required

  • Strong interest in design consulting

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Skilled in AutoCAD and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software

  • Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Preferred

  • Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds

  • Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull

  • Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises

State of New York Pay Range: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location.

Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate's experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.
