How much do mechanical engineer mining jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical engineer mining in Minnesota is $100,760.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $79,800.00 and $123,900.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a mechanical engineer mining?

A Mechanical Engineer in mining is responsible for designing, maintaining, and optimizing mechanical systems and equipment used in mining operations. They work on machinery such as conveyors, crushers, drilling equipment, and ventilation systems to ensure efficiency and safety. Their role also involves troubleshooting mechanical issues, improving reliability, and implementing maintenance strategies. Additionally, they collaborate with other engineers and mine operators to enhance operational performance and minimize downtime.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a mechanical engineer mining?

A Mechanical Engineer in the mining sector commonly oversees the maintenance and optimization of mining machinery, designs new mechanical systems for increased efficiency, and conducts regular equipment inspections to ensure safety compliance. You may also analyze equipment failures, develop preventive maintenance plans, and collaborate closely with mining engineers, geologists, and site managers. Many roles involve both office-based design work and on-site supervision or troubleshooting, offering a mix of hands-on and technical challenges. These daily tasks are essential for minimizing downtime, enhancing safety, and ensuring smooth mine operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineer mining?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer Mining, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, mining processes, and a relevant engineering degree with professional certification (such as EIT or PE preferred). Familiarity with CAD software, mining equipment diagnostic tools, and project management systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills are critical soft skills for success in this field. These competencies are vital for ensuring safe, efficient mining operations and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in often challenging environments.

Can a mechanical engineer work as a mining engineer?

A mechanical engineer can work in mining engineering roles if they acquire specific knowledge of mining processes, geology, and related safety standards. Transitioning may require additional training or certifications in mining operations and environmental regulations. Both roles involve understanding complex systems, but mining engineering focuses more on excavation, mineral extraction, and site management.

How much do mechanical engineers make in mining?

Mechanical engineers working in mining typically earn between $70,000 and $110,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and level of specialization. Those with advanced skills in equipment design, maintenance, or project management may earn higher salaries, especially in regions with active mining industries.
