What does a mechanical design engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical devices and systems. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed blueprints and models, ensuring that products meet required specifications and standards. Their work often involves problem-solving, selecting appropriate materials, and collaborating with other engineers and teams to bring a concept from idea to production. Mechanical Design Engineers are found in a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD design, and problem-solving, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and relevant certifications (like FE or PE) is highly valuable. Strong teamwork, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate on multidisciplinary projects and present design solutions. These abilities are crucial for developing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet both technical requirements and client needs.

What are some typical challenges mechanical design engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mechanical Design Engineers often collaborate closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing teams. One common challenge is ensuring that mechanical designs align with the requirements and constraints of other disciplines, such as electronics placement or thermal management. Effective communication and regular meetings are crucial to resolve conflicts, address design changes, and keep projects on schedule. Building strong cross-functional relationships helps Mechanical Design Engineers anticipate potential issues early and deliver integrated solutions.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Engineer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectMechanical Design EngineerMechanical Drafter
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferredAssociate degree or technical diploma in drafting or CAD technology
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesDrafting departments, engineering firms, manufacturing settings
ResponsibilitiesDesigns, analyzes, and develops mechanical systems and componentsCreates detailed technical drawings and plans based on engineers' designs

The main difference is that Mechanical Design Engineers focus on designing and developing mechanical systems, requiring engineering degrees and licenses, while Mechanical Drafters prepare detailed drawings based on engineers' concepts, typically with technical diplomas. Both roles work closely in the engineering process but serve different functions within the product development cycle.

What is the work of a Mechanical Design Engineer?

A Mechanical Design Engineer develops and creates mechanical systems, components, and products using CAD software and engineering principles. They analyze specifications, perform simulations, and collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are functional, efficient, and manufacturable.

Job description

Nordson EFD, a global leader in Engineered Fluid Dispensing, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we are looking for candidates who share that same commitment.

Summary of the role

As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, where your ideas and contributions will be valued and respected.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - EFD Consumables Development

We are looking for a talented Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Nordson EFD Product Design Team, with a primary focus on the development of highvolume injectionmolded consumable products used in precision fluid dispensing for advanced manufacturing and medical fluid handling.

In this role, you will lead the mechanical design and industrialization of plastic consumables, from concept through production launch. You will apply strong engineering fundamentals, structured problemsolving, and disciplined change management to deliver robust, manufacturable, and highquality products at scale.

How YOU Will Make an Impact

Lead consumable product development for highvolume injectionmolded plastic components, taking designs from early concept through tooling release, validation, and production launch.

Drive project technical leadership, coordinating design activities across crossfunctional teams including manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and external suppliers.

Own DFMEA, PFMEA, and structured risk mitigation activities to ensure robust designs capable of meeting performance, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Partner closely with external molders and tooling suppliers to optimize part design for manufacturability, cost, yield, and cycle time.

Apply structured problemsolving techniques (root cause analysis, DOE, failure analysis) to resolve design, manufacturing, and field issues.

Select and validate polymer materials based on functional requirements, chemical compatibility, processability, and longterm reliability.

Create highquality CAD models and drawings (SolidWorks) including detailed GD&T, tolerances, and specifications to support global manufacturing.

Perform tolerance stackups, mold flow analysis interpretation, and FEA as appropriate to validate performance and manufacturability.

Lead design verification and validation planning and execution; analyze results, debug failures, and implement corrective actions.

Provide technical support to sustain existing consumable products, including quality escalations, costreduction initiatives, and supply chain changes.

Contribute to the design and integration of electromechanical subsystems (actuators, sensors, assemblies) as a secondary responsibility.

Qualifications to Be Successful

8+ years of mechanical product development experience, with strong emphasis on injectionmolded plastic components and consumable products.

Demonstrated experience leading highvolume molded part designs through full product lifecycle, including tooling, validation, and rampup.

Strong knowledge of plastic part design, polymer selection, mold tooling fundamentals, gate/flow considerations, shrink/warp, and cosmetic requirements.

Proven experience with DFMEA, structured change management (ECOs), and disciplined design processes.

Handson proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks) and production of clear, accurate 2D drawings with GD&T.

Experience applying structured problemsolving methodologies, DOE, and rootcause analysis to technical challenges.

Working knowledge of FEA, tolerance analysis, and interpretation of simulation results.

Ability to create clear and effective engineering documentation, including drawings, test plans, reports, SOPs, and change orders.

Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across global, crossfunctional teams.

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
