What is a mechanical design checker?

A Mechanical Design Checker is responsible for reviewing engineering drawings and designs to ensure accuracy, compliance with standards, and manufacturability. They check for errors, inconsistencies, and adherence to company or industry specifications. This role requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of GD&T, and proficiency in CAD software. Design Checkers work closely with engineers and designers to suggest improvements and ensure high-quality deliverables.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a mechanical design checker?

Mechanical Design Checkers are primarily responsible for reviewing detailed engineering drawings and 3D models to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with industry standards and company requirements. On a typical day, you might verify dimensions and tolerances, check bill of materials, and cross-reference documentation for clarity and completeness. You'll frequently collaborate with design engineers to address discrepancies and provide recommended corrections, often serving as a final quality gate before designs move to production. This role requires a keen eye for detail and steady communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring that high standards are met throughout the design lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the mechanical design checker position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Checker, you need a deep understanding of engineering principles, strong attention to detail, and experience with mechanical drafting standards—often supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or related field. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA), knowledge of GD&T symbols, and familiarity with PLM systems are typically required, while certifications like ASME Y14.5 can be advantageous. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to provide constructive feedback help you excel when collaborating with design engineers and cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial to ensure design accuracy, compliance with standards, and to prevent costly errors in manufacturing and assembly processes.
