What is mechanical design automation?

Mechanical design automation refers to the use of computer-aided tools and software to automate and streamline the process of designing mechanical systems and components. It allows engineers to quickly create, modify, and analyze designs, reducing manual effort and errors. This approach improves efficiency, enables rapid prototyping, and enhances collaboration by integrating design, simulation, and documentation processes. Mechanical design automation is widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing to accelerate product development and innovation.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Automation vs Mechanical CAD Designer?

AspectMechanical Design AutomationMechanical CAD Designer
Primary FocusDeveloping and implementing automated tools and systems for mechanical design processesCreating detailed 2D/3D CAD models and drawings for mechanical components and assemblies
Required SkillsProgramming, scripting, CAD software proficiency, systems integrationCAD software expertise, drafting, geometric modeling
Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, automation software companies, manufacturing industriesDesign studios, manufacturing companies, engineering departments
CertificationsCAD software certifications, engineering degrees, automation tools trainingCAD certifications, mechanical engineering degrees

Mechanical Design Automation focuses on creating automated systems to streamline mechanical design tasks, while Mechanical CAD Designers concentrate on producing detailed CAD models and drawings. Both roles often collaborate but serve different functions within the mechanical design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Design Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD modeling, and automation programming, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, as well as experience with automation tools like MATLAB, Python, or specialized PLM systems, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this field. These skills and qualities enable efficient, innovative design solutions and seamless integration of automated processes in complex engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Mechanical Design Automation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Mechanical Design Automation often encounter challenges such as integrating new automation tools with legacy CAD systems, managing complex design iterations, and ensuring cross-functional collaboration between engineering and manufacturing teams. Staying current with evolving software and industry standards can also be demanding. Addressing these challenges typically involves continuous learning, fostering open communication across departments, and leveraging automation best practices to streamline workflows and reduce manual errors.

Job description

Amazon Web Services' Hardware Engineering team is looking for experienced professionals to help build the world's premier cloud computing platform. Our Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering team designs, validates, and deploys automation solutions - robotics, cobots, vision inspection, AI-powered quality systems, and automated assembly workflows - across contract manufacturer sites worldwide.
About the Role: You will own the mechanical design IP that every automation cell depends on - fixtures, jigs, end-of-arm tooling, grippers, and custom mechanical interfaces between robots and product components. Every cobot needs tooling

Every station needs fixtures. Every platform changeover needs quick-change adapters. You define the mechanical design architecture and reuse strategy: modular fixture libraries, cross-platform EOAT standards, and design-for-reuse principles that ensure mechanical hardware scales across all platforms and contract manufacturer sites without redesign.

You independently lead mechanical design vendors and own the fixture/tooling IP library that is core to AWS's automation replication strategy.
Our scope covers all server and rack assembly across all architectures and platforms - compute, AI/ML accelerators, storage, and networking. We design intelligent, predictive-analytics-driven production systems where every station is sensor-driven, AI-optimized, and self-correcting - turning assembly lines into programmable, data-generating platforms that scale capacity without scaling headcount. This role requires the engineer to operate in a fast-paced, multi-platform international manufacturing environment with travel to contract manufacturer sites (up to 25-30% travel anticipated).
Key job responsibilities
Define mechanical design architecture: fixture library standards, Tools and Fixture reuse strategy, modular design principles
Design fixtures, jigs, and work-holding devices for automated assembly operations
Design Tools and Fixtures: custom grippers, vacuum end-effectors, tool changers per application
Create 3D CAD models for cell mechanical integration (robot mounting, conveyor interfaces, part presentation)
Own and maintain design library of validated fixtures/tools for cross-platform reuse
Lead mechanical design vendors through specification, evaluation, and acceptance
Prototype and validate mechanical designs through rapid iteration (3D printing, machining)
Design pick-point interfaces between automation equipment and server components (chassis, heatsinks, DIMMs)
About the team
We are building a centralized automation Center of Excellence that owns the process specification and IP for how AWS hardware gets assembled. The Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering team is responsible for engineering - defining automated process requirements, designing and proving solutions at proof-of-concept, and maintaining AWS-owned intellectual property that scales globally

We work within a collaborative framework across Hardware Engineering (product design for automation), Manufacturing Automation Design & Engineering (process specification and validation), and Manufacturing Operations (deployment and scaling) - ensuring automation is engineered once, proven once, and deployed everywhere.
