What is mechanical design automation?

Mechanical design automation refers to the use of computer-aided tools and software to automate and streamline the process of designing mechanical systems and components. It allows engineers to quickly create, modify, and analyze designs, reducing manual effort and errors. This approach improves efficiency, enables rapid prototyping, and enhances collaboration by integrating design, simulation, and documentation processes. Mechanical design automation is widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing to accelerate product development and innovation.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Automation vs Mechanical CAD Designer?

AspectMechanical Design AutomationMechanical CAD Designer
Primary FocusDeveloping and implementing automated tools and systems for mechanical design processesCreating detailed 2D/3D CAD models and drawings for mechanical components and assemblies
Required SkillsProgramming, scripting, CAD software proficiency, systems integrationCAD software expertise, drafting, geometric modeling
Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, automation software companies, manufacturing industriesDesign studios, manufacturing companies, engineering departments
CertificationsCAD software certifications, engineering degrees, automation tools trainingCAD certifications, mechanical engineering degrees

Mechanical Design Automation focuses on creating automated systems to streamline mechanical design tasks, while Mechanical CAD Designers concentrate on producing detailed CAD models and drawings. Both roles often collaborate but serve different functions within the mechanical design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Design Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD modeling, and automation programming, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, as well as experience with automation tools like MATLAB, Python, or specialized PLM systems, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this field. These skills and qualities enable efficient, innovative design solutions and seamless integration of automated processes in complex engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Mechanical Design Automation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Mechanical Design Automation often encounter challenges such as integrating new automation tools with legacy CAD systems, managing complex design iterations, and ensuring cross-functional collaboration between engineering and manufacturing teams. Staying current with evolving software and industry standards can also be demanding. Addressing these challenges typically involves continuous learning, fostering open communication across departments, and leveraging automation best practices to streamline workflows and reduce manual errors.

Job description

Orbit Motion Systems is looking for a mechanical design engineer with experience in machine and subassembly design. As a specialty machine builder, we focus on automating manufacturing tasks in the fields of packaging and food and beverage industries. Using robotic technologies and motion programming competencies, we are able to build automatic equipment to support our customers.
With a focus on machine design and end of arm robotic tooling the day to day tasks would be varied as we go from project to project. Working in conjunction with our fabrication, electrical, and software staff this role will be a compliment to the existing team.
A proper candidate will be able to perform the design, layout, testing, and evaluation of mechanical assemblies and prove the viability before integration into the final machine. Previous mechanical design experience is a must and a portfolio of work will be required.
Education Requirement:
  • BS in engineering with a minimum of 5-10 years of related work experiences
  • Ability to integrate the use of cam movements, pneumatics, and/or hydraulics when necessary to perform specific functions and product movements

Required Skills:
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment and in machine shops
  • Organized and accountable with ability to manage many projects simultaneously
  • Strong communicator, verbal and written
  • Strong technical aptitude and innovative and creative thinking, problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • 3D design and analysis software proficiency required (e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Pro/E)
  • Proficient with Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Adaptability to adjust to rapidly changing work environments and operational situations
  • Support hands-on design and development of sub-assemblies and platforms
  • Support all engineering processes, including drafting and detailed design using SolidWorks CAD platform
  • Test designs and execution to support verification and validation of new designs
  • Execute small to medium sized mechanical design projects, commensurate with ability and skill level, from concept to completion

Bonus Skills:
  • Machining experience
  • Electrical knowledge

Compensation Details: The expected rate of pay for this position is starting at $85,000 annually, depending on experience.
