Mechanic Helpers are entry-level workers who assist mechanics and technicians in maintaining, repairing, and servicing vehicles or machinery. Their duties often include preparing work areas, handing tools to mechanics, cleaning equipment, and performing simple maintenance tasks under supervision. Mechanic Helpers gain hands-on experience and learn the trade, which can lead to more advanced positions in the automotive or mechanical field. The role requires attention to detail, willingness to learn, and good communication skills. It's a common starting point for those interested in a career in automotive repair or mechanical maintenance.

What does a mechanic helper do?

A mechanical helper assists an experienced automotive mechanic with their job duties. Your responsibilities are to help a journeyman mechanic with vehicle maintenance tasks, such as an oil change, tire rotation, or equipment repair. You also move vehicles and their parts and clean the work area. You may inspect the vehicle and note important observations for the mechanic. You remove and reassemble parts, assist with light maintenance duties, and keep equipment and tools clean for your supervising mechanic. Mechanic helpers typically work in this position for several months to learn the skills necessary to further their career and become a journeyman mechanic.

What are some typical responsibilities a mechanic helper can expect on a daily basis?

As a Mechanic Helper, you can expect to assist mechanics with tasks such as preparing work areas, handing tools and parts, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and performing basic repairs under supervision. You'll often be responsible for organizing parts, disposing of used materials, and ensuring safety protocols are followed in the workshop. This role is hands-on and provides valuable exposure to the technical aspects of mechanical work while supporting the team's overall efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanic helper, and why are they important?

Familiarity with hand and power tools, as well as the ability to follow safety protocols, is typically required, and some employers may prefer candidates with vocational training or relevant certifications. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a willingness to learn make someone stand out in this position. These skills and qualities are vital for supporting mechanics effectively, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring efficient repairs and maintenance.

Job Description

This entry-level Service Level Mechanic I position focuses on performing preventive maintenance, cleaning, troubleshooting, and basic repairs on a wide range of rental equipment and tools used for home projects and renovations. You will work under the guidance of a mechanic-turned-service manager, learning company standards while helping ensure equipment is safe, reliable, and ready for customers. This role combines hands-on mechanical work with customer-facing support in a fast-paced rental environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on rental equipment to minimize downtime and ensure safe, reliable operation.
  • Clean, inspect, and prepare equipment and tools so they are rental-ready, including pressure washing and detailing as needed.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and basic repairs on mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel-powered equipment.
  • Support cycle counts and inventory-related tasks on the shop floor to help maintain accurate equipment and parts records.
  • Conduct oil changes, brake pad changes, battery changes, and other routine service tasks on a variety of rental tools and machines.
  • Diagnose and address issues related to hydraulic systems using troubleshooting fundamentals and established procedures.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems up to 240 volts, including batteries and basic rewiring tasks, under supervision as needed.
  • Communicate with homeowners and other customers renting tools, providing patient, clear, and courteous customer service.
  • Follow safety procedures and company standards to perform all work in the safest, most effective manner possible.
  • Adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment, assisting wherever needed on the shop floor.
  • Ensure equipment is properly staged, cleaned, and prepped before it is rented again, contributing to a professional and organized shop.
  • Collaborate with technicians and leadership to learn best practices and continuously improve technical skills.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1 to 3 years of technician experience with diesel equipment, heavy construction equipment, or specialty lines equipment (such as large-scale generators, pumps, HVAC, or oil and gas equipment) strongly preferred.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude with experience performing oil changes, mechanical repairs, and routine service tasks.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems and troubleshooting fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems up to 240 volts, including troubleshooting batteries and basic rewiring.
  • Ability to perform battery changes, brake pad changes, and basic diesel troubleshooting.
  • Customer service skills with the patience to work effectively with homeowners and other customers renting tools for home projects.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of common tools and safe tool usage.
  • Commitment to following safety procedures and company standards in all aspects of work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Some trade school education or equivalent technical training is desired.
  • Experience with specialty rental equipment such as large generators, pumps, or HVAC systems is a plus.
  • Interest in learning and growing within a structured training environment under experienced mechanics.
  • Strong teamwork skills and willingness to assist with non-mechanical tasks such as cycle counts and shop organization.
  • Comfort working with diesel-powered equipment and basic diagnostic tools.
  • Motivation to build a long-term career in equipment maintenance and rental services.

Why Work Here?

You will join a well-established leader in the equipment rental industry that is committed to serving customers, communities, and the planet through a wide network of locations and an extensive portfolio of products and services. The organization offers clear opportunities for growth, with many leaders having started in entry-level roles and advanced their careers internally. You will benefit from a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off for vacation, sick time, inclusion holidays, bereavement, profit-sharing bonuses, and seven paid holidays, including Labor Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day, plus half days on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and occasional half days on Thanksgiving. Additional perks include a tool allowance program, a steel-toe allowance once you become a direct employee, and an interactive rewards program where you can earn points and redeem gifts by participating in health and engagement challenges. This environment supports long-term career development, recognizes effort, and encourages employees to grow their skills and contributions over time.

Work Environment

You will work in a large, open 40,000-square-foot facility that operates primarily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., typically totaling 40–45 hours per week and occasionally up to 50 hours. The shop is a non-climate-controlled open garage environment with large doors and fans, which means it can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The facility includes a break room and water coolers, and you are encouraged to stay hydrated throughout the day. The schedule includes a 30-minute lunch break and two 10-minute breaks. You will work around various rental tools and equipment, including generators, concrete grinders, solar light towers, industrial jackhammers, and other construction and home-project equipment, using standard shop tools and equipment to perform maintenance and repairs.
