As of Jul 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanic design in Delavan, WI is $66,398.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $56,200.00 and $82,100.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in technical drawing, and typically a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) and simulation tools is crucial for creating and analyzing design models. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and good communication skills help ensure accurate designs and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are vital for producing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What is the difference between Mechanic Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMechanic DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD labs, manufacturing settingsResearch labs, manufacturing plants, consulting firms
Industry UsageProduct design, prototyping, CAD modelingSystem design, thermodynamics, structural analysis

Mechanic Design focuses on creating detailed product models and prototypes using CAD tools, often with specific design certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, system design, and engineering principles, often requiring a PE license. Both roles are integral to manufacturing and product development but differ in scope and credentials.

What are some common challenges faced by mechanical design engineers in project development?

Mechanical design engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovation with manufacturability, managing strict project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance—is essential to address design constraints and optimize product performance. Staying up to date with evolving CAD tools and rapidly changing technology also requires continuous learning and adaptation.

What is a Mechanic Design?

A Mechanic Design refers to a professional who specializes in designing mechanical systems and components, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software. These individuals are responsible for creating blueprints, models, and specifications for machines, tools, engines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanic Design professionals play a key role in ensuring that designs are efficient, functional, and manufacturable while meeting safety and regulatory standards. They often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders throughout the development process.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Pioneer the Future of Linear Motion

PBC Linear, a recognized leader in linear motion innovation, is seeking a highly skilled Sr Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Product Engineering team. For over 40 years, PBC Linear has pioneered the industry, establishing leadership through developments like the self-lubricating plain linear bearing. We are a major US manufacturer committed to engineering excellence and supplying precision components, guides, rails, and advanced actuators.

This is a critical, hands-on engineering role focused on driving innovation within the linear motion industry. If you thrive on tackling complex engineering challenges, owning projects from concept to completion, and pushing the boundaries of mechanical design, we want to hear from you.

What You Will Master: Analysis, Design, and Validation

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer reporting to Product Design Engineering Manager, you will play a vital role in designing the next generation of components and motion systems, including linear bearings, actuators, and custom motion systems.

Design and Development Challenges:

• Lead clean-sheet mechanical designs for linear bearings, actuators, and motion systems.

• Own the full-cycle development process, ensuring designs move efficiently from concept through validation and ultimate release.

• Identify design differentiators by reverse engineering competitive products.

Calculations, Testing, and Modeling: You must be comfortable with intensive engineering analysis and dedicated validation to ensure product integrity:

• Perform essential engineering calculations, including load analysis, stress analysis, drive load analysis, motion profile analysis, tolerance stack up analysis, and material selection.

• Develop comprehensive test plans and execute validation testing to prove models and iterate designs accordingly.

• Utilize CAD (SOLIDWORKS) and FEA tools for modeling and simulation.

• Create and maintain accurate 3D models, 2D drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).

Collaboration and Support:

• Ensure designs align with customer needs and manufacturability by working closely with sourcing, manufacturing, and marketing teams.

• Support product launches by providing necessary CAD assets, technical data, and content for catalogs.

Do You Have What It Takes?

We are seeking a candidate who brings a combination of solid mechanical fundamentals and specific linear motion expertise.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

• Familiarity with motion control systems (drives, motors, encoders, sensors) and electro-mechanical systems.

• Experience with component testing, rapid prototyping, and reverse engineering.

• Knowledge of various manufacturing processes, including extrusion, machining, injection molding, and assembly.

Preferred Experience:

5+ years of direct, proven experience in the linear motion industry (including bearings, guides, actuators, or motion systems).

• Proven experience designing linear motion products, such as recirculating or plain bearing technology, lead screw or ball screw actuators, or profile rail systems.

  • Experience Developing products and managing projects within a gated product development system.

• Experience creating catalog content, product datasheets, and working with web-based product configurators.
