Mechanic Design information

What is a mechanic design?

A Mechanic Design refers to a professional who specializes in designing mechanical systems and components, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software. These individuals are responsible for creating blueprints, models, and specifications for machines, tools, engines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanic Design professionals play a key role in ensuring that designs are efficient, functional, and manufacturable while meeting safety and regulatory standards. They often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders throughout the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in technical drawing, and typically a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) and simulation tools is crucial for creating and analyzing design models. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and good communication skills help ensure accurate designs and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are vital for producing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by mechanical design engineers in project development?

Mechanical design engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovation with manufacturability, managing strict project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance—is essential to address design constraints and optimize product performance. Staying up to date with evolving CAD tools and rapidly changing technology also requires continuous learning and adaptation.

What is the difference between Mechanic Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMechanic DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD labs, manufacturing settingsResearch labs, manufacturing plants, consulting firms
Industry UsageProduct design, prototyping, CAD modelingSystem design, thermodynamics, structural analysis

Mechanic Design focuses on creating detailed product models and prototypes using CAD tools, often with specific design certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, system design, and engineering principles, often requiring a PE license. Both roles are integral to manufacturing and product development but differ in scope and credentials.

Job Description

Vestcom, an Avery Dennison Company, designs and builds its own converting and robotic equipment that supports the manufacture and production of our high-quality retail labeling and pricing solutions. We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Machine Group in Conway, AR. This role is responsible for the design, improvement, and support of our custom manufacturing and automation systems used across Vestcom’s production network. This position requires demonstrated mechanical engineering expertise and independent judgment in solving moderately to highly complex design and process challenges. The individual in this role will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in engineering, manufacturing/production, and maintenance to optimize performance, ensure safety compliance, and enable scalability in production.

This is an on-site position operating on a Monday–Thursday, 05:00–15:30 schedule.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing new devices, components, and custom automated systems from concept to working prototype using CAD software (Inventor, AutoCAD), and managing the full product lifecycle.

  • Overseeing the installation, testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems and proprietary equipment designs to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations across multiple production networks.

  • Developing and testing prototypes to evaluate performance, diagnosing problems with existing equipment, and independently developing targeted R&D solutions.

  • Collaborating closely with cross-functional shop and production personnel—including manual machining, CNC, and assembly—to brainstorm concepts and establish practical process understanding.

  • Developing and maintaining detailed engineering documentation, blueprints, technical drawings, test procedures, equipment validation records, and reports for various stakeholders.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

  • 3+ years of engineering experience in mechanical system design, robotics, or automation in a manufacturing or R&D setting, with a background in machining highly preferred.

  • Proficiency in CAD and mechanical design tools (such as Inventor and AutoCAD) along with strong hands-on mechanical ability and analytical skills.

  • Deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles, systems, components, and familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, or equivalent).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation, combined with demonstrated curiosity, active listening, and a willingness to ask questions.
