Job description

The Meat Cutter Apprentice will work under the direct supervision of experienced butchers and meat cutters to learn the skills and techniques necessary for cutting, trimming, and preparing various types of meat. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals passionate about pursuing a career in the meat industry, providing hands-on experience and training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the cutting, trimming, deboning, and grinding of meat in accordance with Clark’s Market standards and customer specifications.
  • Learn to properly operate meat cutting tools and equipment such as knives, saws, grinders, and other machinery.
  • Gain knowledge of various cuts of meat and the best practices for each type.
  • Understand and adhere to safety and sanitation guidelines to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Participate in training sessions and on-the-job learning opportunities provided by the meat department manager.
  • Provide excellent customer service by assisting customers with their meat selection and answering any questions they may have.
  • Ensure customer orders are accurately fulfilled in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the inventory management by monitoring stock levels and notifying the manager when supplies are low.
  • Help in the receiving and inspection of meat deliveries to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Assist in the regular cleaning and maintenance of meat cutting areas and equipment.
  • Help ensure that all equipment is properly sanitized and in good working order.
  • Work collaboratively with the meat department team to meet production goals and maintain department standards.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors to ensure efficient workflow and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Prior experience in a retail or food service environment is a plus but not required.
  • Food Safety Certification Preferred,
  • Strong interest in learning the meat cutting trade.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to lift heavy items (up to 50 pounds) and stand for long periods.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work well under supervision.

Working Conditions:

  • Work in a cold environment, such as a refrigerated meat room.
  • Use sharp tools and heavy machinery, requiring attention to safety protocols.
  • Wear protective gear as required (e.g., gloves, aprons).
  • Prolonged standing & walking – up to 7 hours per day on your feet
