What is an MBSE?

An MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) job involves using models to support the design, analysis, and development of complex systems. Professionals in this role employ modeling languages like SysML to create digital representations of systems, improving communication and reducing errors. They often work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and defense, ensuring systems meet requirements efficiently. MBSE engineers collaborate with cross-functional teams and integrate models with engineering tools to streamline the development process.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE)?

As an MBSE professional, your daily responsibilities usually involve developing and maintaining system models that capture requirements, architecture, and interfaces throughout the product lifecycle. You'll collaborate closely with engineers from different domains—such as software, hardware, and testing—to ensure system consistency and traceability. MBSE roles often require participation in technical reviews, documentation of model-based artifacts, and providing support during integration and verification phases. You may also help train other team members in modeling techniques and ensure best practices are followed across projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MBSE, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE), you need a deep understanding of systems engineering principles, modeling languages like SysML, and a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler, IBM Rational Rhapsody, or Enterprise Architect, as well as certification like INCOSE CSEP, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help MBSE professionals translate complex requirements into actionable models and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring robust system architectures, reducing development risks, and streamlining the systems engineering process.

Is MBSE a good career?

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is a specialized field that involves using modeling tools and methodologies to improve system design and development. It is in demand in industries such as aerospace, defense, and automotive, offering opportunities for engineers with skills in systems modeling, SysML, and related tools. Careers in MBSE can be stable and rewarding for those with technical expertise and a background in systems engineering or software development.

Through dedicated hard work and commitment, we provide distinctive quality and unparalleled customer service in all aspects of our business. We also recognize that our employees are the key to our success, and it is our mission to take care of them so they can, in turn, take care of our customers and communities where we live, work, and play.

Position Summary

We are seeking candidates who are passionate about operational testing and the research, systems engineering, design, and integration of capabilities required to create a multi-domain operations environment for the testing of signature modernization efforts. This position provides research, and supports the development of UAF/DODAF views tailored to the systems engineering and integration (SE&I) efforts for the future development of capabilities for the MDO environment needed for the operational testing of Future Vertical Lift, Maneuver (XM30 and Robotic Combat Vehicle), Intelligence Electromagnetic Warfare & Cyber (TITAN/TLS), and Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) Systems Under Test (SUT).

The selected candidate will work at our office in Killeen, TX, four days a week, with one day of remote work per week. This role is responsible for developing viewpoints (Operational, Service, etc.) and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) models that demonstrate what additional capabilities are needed for the MDO environment that supports the operational testing of future vertical lift, XM-30/RCV, & TITAN/TLS systems under test. Additionally, outputs from the SE&I effort support the development of test functions and objectives as part of future course of action development that will be submitted to the government. This position will report to the Innovation Cell Manager.

This is an exciting opportunity to pioneer the product development of the MDO Environment and associated Data planning, preparation, monitoring, and assessment tools for Operational Test environments. This role will require creativity and innovation to combine the discipline of Systems Engineering with larger program and corporate objectives.

What You’ll Do

Duties: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct trade studies to include cost-benefit analyses to develop cost-efficient systems for specific projects.
  • Identify stakeholder, customer, and user needs and assess the root cause of the needs. Based on that information, design UAF/DODAF views for a new system or improve existing systems to enhance their functionality and efficiency.
  • Derive and manage requirements that guide the development of courses of action for the government to make decisions on solutions that close gaps in the Multi-Domain Operations environment needed for Operational Testing.
  • Perform Systems Engineering activities such as requirements development and traceability, system model development, design documentation, and verification and validation analysis over the lifecycle of the MDO environment gap closure development effort.
  • Support the Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) processes within standard toolsets in a manner that enables efficient and effective response to changing mission needs and rapidly evolving system requirements to model operational testing processes for test and evaluation with the AOTI Systems Engineering team.
  • Coordinate with program management personnel to prioritize programmatic and technical objectives.
  • Maintain requirements baseline within MBSE tools to ensure consistency across all areas of engineering concern (e.g., mission and user requirements, system functions and attributes, and architectural and design components).
  • Assist in managing software interface requirements and definitions.
  • Less than 25% travel may be required.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school in a technical discipline (engineering, science, computer science/engineering), and 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Background in developmental or operational testing
  • Must be a graduate of a military service school equivalent to the Army Command and General Staff College (Military Education Level - 4 qualification is preferred)
  • Experience with Multi-Domain Operations and how to replicate the MDO environment
  • Exposure to a software development environment utilizing Agile methodology
  • Exposure to software system architecture definition, system, and subsystem level requirements definition, and from existing operational concepts and use cases
