What is an MBSE engineer?

An MBSE Engineer is a professional who specializes in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), a methodology that uses models to support the requirements, design, analysis, verification, and validation of complex systems. Instead of relying solely on traditional documents, MBSE Engineers use modeling tools and standards to create a comprehensive and integrated system model. This approach improves communication, reduces errors, and enhances system design and analysis throughout a project's lifecycle. MBSE Engineers often work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and manufacturing where complex system integration is required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MBSE engineer?

To thrive as an MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) Engineer, you need expertise in systems engineering principles, requirements analysis, and model development, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency with modeling tools such as SysML, MagicDraw, Enterprise Architect, or Cameo Systems Modeler and relevant certifications like INCOSE CSEP are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help MBSE Engineers collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and convey complex ideas clearly. These skills are crucial for designing, integrating, and validating complex systems efficiently while minimizing errors and ensuring project success.

What are some common challenges MBSE engineers face when integrating model-based systems engineering into existing workflows?

MBSE Engineers often encounter challenges when introducing model-based approaches into organizations that have traditionally relied on document-based processes. This can include resistance to change from team members, the need to align different tools and data formats, and ensuring that all stakeholders understand and trust the models being created. Successful MBSE Engineers typically address these challenges by promoting clear communication, offering training sessions, and demonstrating the tangible benefits of MBSE, such as improved traceability and early error detection. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and providing ongoing support are also key factors in smooth integration.

What is the difference between Mbse Engineer vs Systems Engineer?

AspectMbse EngineerSystems Engineer
CertificationsModel-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) certifications, UML, SysMLINCOSE Systems Engineering certifications, PMP, UML, SysML
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, collaborate with engineering teamsOversee system integration, requirements analysis, project management
Industry UsageAerospace, automotive, defense, where modeling is keyBroad industry use including aerospace, IT, manufacturing

While both roles involve systems thinking and modeling, an Mbse Engineer primarily focuses on creating and managing system models using MBSE tools and methodologies. A Systems Engineer has a broader scope, including requirements management, system integration, and project oversight. The roles often overlap but differ in focus and responsibilities.

Job description

Strategic ACI is seeking a Digital Engineering (DE) / MBSE Engineer to build and operate the modeling backbone of a Digital Engineering Ecosystem supporting NGA. This hands-on role drives day-to-day MBSE modeling activities, mission engineering support, and Digital Thread implementation in close collaboration with the platform engineering team.

This position is central to standing up UAF/SysML models, integrating MBSE with Modeling, Simulation & Analysis (MS&A) tools, and delivering a modular, open, standards-based ecosystem of tools and pipelines supporting the program's Digital Engineering layer. The role supports engineering research, design development, and technical assignments in conformance with program specifications, ensuring deliverables are completed within estimated time frames, budget constraints, and established quality standards.

Salary will be commensurate within the advertised range, based on applicable qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Build, maintain, and evolve UAF and SysML (v1 and emerging v2) models supporting Digital Twins and the enterprise engineering baseline.
  • Configure and operate the DE tool chain, including Cameo Enterprise Architect (with Simulation Toolkit, UAF, SysML, and DataHub plugins), Teamwork Cloud for model configuration management, and VS Code/SysIDE for SysMLv2 textual model validation.
  • Establish and maintain interoperability between MBSE and Modeling, Simulation & Analysis (MS&A) tools (e.g., AFSIM, STK, Unreal Engine) to create Digital Threads linking engineering capabilities.
  • Support requirements management integration with IBM DOORS Next and traceability tooling such as Syndeia.
  • Participate in current-state capture, tool trade studies, and gap analysis for DE/MBSE and data-layer tool evaluations.
  • Support delivery of the repository of MBSE SysML models, DE data repository, tool deployments and integrations, and the Digital Engineering Management Plan (DEMP).
  • Collaborate with mission engineering/domain SMEs to translate mission threads and measures of performance/effectiveness (MoPs/MoEs) into model-based artifacts.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Active TS clearance, with SCI eligibility and the ability to pass a CI polygraph within 30 days.
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or additional relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 5+ years of relevant MBSE/digital engineering experience.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining SysML and/or UAF models using Cameo Enterprise Architect or comparable MBSE tooling.
  • Experience with model configuration management (e.g., Teamwork Cloud) and requirements management tools (e.g., IBM DOORS/DOORS Next).
  • Familiarity with digital thread concepts linking requirements, design, test, and operational data across the engineering lifecycle.

Desired:

  • Experience supporting NGA, DoD, or Intelligence Community digital engineering or modeling & simulation programs.
  • Working knowledge of SysMLv2 and textual modeling tools such as SysIDE.
  • Experience with Modeling, Simulation & Analysis (MS&A) tools such as AFSIM, STK, or Unreal Engine, or geospatial platforms such as ArcGIS.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML-enabled workflows into modeling or requirements decomposition processes.
  • INCOSE CSEP or equivalent certification.
