What is an MBA internship?

MBA internships are temporary work placements designed specifically for Master of Business Administration (MBA) students, typically completed during the summer between the first and second year of their program. These internships allow students to gain real-world business experience, apply classroom knowledge, and build professional networks. They often serve as a pathway to full-time job offers after graduation and provide exposure to various industries, such as consulting, finance, marketing, or operations. MBA internships are highly competitive and can significantly enhance a student's resume and career prospects.

What types of projects or responsibilities can I expect during an MBA internship?

MBA internships typically involve working on high-impact projects such as market analysis, strategic planning, financial modeling, or process improvement initiatives. Interns often collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, presenting findings and recommendations to management or senior executives. The work environment is usually fast-paced, offering exposure to real business challenges and opportunities to contribute meaningfully. These experiences help interns develop practical skills and expand their professional network, which can be instrumental for future career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an MBA internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in MBA internships, you need a strong grasp of business fundamentals, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills, typically supported by enrollment in an MBA program. Familiarity with data analysis tools (such as Excel or Tableau), presentation software, and sometimes project management systems is advantageous. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and stakeholders. These skills enable interns to contribute meaningful insights, adapt to fast-paced environments, and maximize their learning and impact during the internship.

Job description

MBA Founder's Office Internship

Company: Open Legal Inc.

Product: 1ClickEfile

Location: Frisco / Dallas, TX โ€” In Person

Schedule: Mondayโ€“Friday, 11:00 AMโ€“5:00 PM

Commitment: ~30 hours/week

Compensation: $20/hour + performance-based commission up to 20%

About Open Legal

Open Legal Inc. is building the next generation of legal technology with one mission: democratizing access to justice.

We are an AI-first company building products for law firms and consumers that reduce the cost, complexity, and friction of navigating the legal system. We focus on high-impact problems where better technology can make legal services more accessible, efficient, and scalable.

1ClickEfile is one of those products, built to revolutionize e-filing for law firms by making the process faster, simpler, and more intelligent.

About the Role

We are looking for a former founder or entrepreneurial MBA student to join Open Legal as a Founder in Residence Intern.

This is a paid, part-time MBA internship structured more like an early-stage operating role than a traditional internship.

Your initial focus will be helping grow 1ClickEfile through sales and go-to-market execution. You will identify prospective law firms, reach decision-makers, run product demos, manage follow-ups, test messaging, and help convert prospects into customers.

But the role will not stay narrowly focused on sales.

We are constantly experimenting, so your responsibilities may move across sales, marketing, growth, customer research, partnerships, positioning, pricing, and other high-priority Founderโ€™s Office initiatives.

We want someone who is comfortable figuring things out rather than waiting for a playbook.

What Youโ€™ll Do

โ€ข Build and execute outbound strategies targeting law firms

โ€ข Reach attorneys, law firm owners, administrators, and other decision-makers through phone, email, LinkedIn, and other channels

โ€ข Run product demos and manage prospects through the sales funnel

โ€ข Test messaging, customer segments, channels, and GTM strategies

โ€ข Analyze pipeline, conversion, and customer feedback

โ€ข Help develop a repeatable sales and growth playbook

โ€ข Experiment with marketing, partnerships, and new acquisition channels

โ€ข Conduct customer, competitor, and market research

โ€ข Work directly with the founders on high-priority growth and company-building problems

Who Weโ€™re Looking For

We strongly prefer candidates who have previously founded or co-founded a company.

Your startup does not need to have succeeded. We care that you understand what it means to operate with limited resources, incomplete information, changing priorities, and responsibility for outcomes.

You should also be:

โ€ข Currently pursuing an MBA or similar graduate business degree

โ€ข Comfortable making outbound calls and talking to prospective customers

โ€ข Strong at both strategic thinking and hands-on execution

โ€ข Resourceful, analytical, and self-directed

โ€ข Comfortable with rejection and rapid experimentation

โ€ข Able to move quickly from an idea to execution

โ€ข A strong verbal and written communicator

โ€ข Excited about working directly with founders in an early-stage environment

Nice to Have

โ€ข Previous founder, co-founder, or early startup experience

โ€ข Legal sales experience

โ€ข Experience as a JD, paralegal, legal assistant, law firm administrator, or in another legal role

โ€ข Legal-tech, SaaS, or B2B software experience

โ€ข Outbound sales, business development, or partnerships experience

โ€ข Growth marketing or go-to-market experience

โ€ข Familiarity with how law firms operate and purchase technology

โ€ข Experience with CRM, prospecting, or sales automation tools

โ€ข Interest in AI, legal technology, and entrepreneurship

Compensation & Opportunity

This role pays $20/hour plus performance-based commission of up to 20%.

The internship is approximately 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

While this is formally an MBA internship, the scope and expectations are closer to an early-stage operating role: high ownership, direct access to the founders, measurable business outcomes, and rapidly changing priorities.

Exceptional performers may have the opportunity to take on greater responsibility across sales, growth, marketing, business development, strategy, or other areas of Open Legal.

  • If you want an internship where you work on real customers, real revenue, and real company-building problems, weโ€™d like to hear from you.
