Matrix Agency information

What is a Matrix Agency?

A Matrix Agency is a type of organizational structure where employees report to multiple managers, typically both a functional manager and a project or product manager. This allows for greater flexibility and collaboration across departments, as resources and expertise can be shared more efficiently. Matrix Agencies are common in industries that require dynamic project management and cross-functional teamwork, such as marketing, consulting, and advertising. However, they can also present challenges, such as role ambiguity and potential conflicts between managers.

What types of clients or industries does a Matrix Agency professional typically work with, and how does this impact daily responsibilities?

At a Matrix Agency, professionals often engage with clients from diverse industries such as marketing, advertising, technology, or media. This variety requires adaptability, as daily tasks can include managing multiple projects, tailoring campaigns to different client needs, and collaborating closely with both internal creative teams and external stakeholders. The dynamic environment encourages creative problem-solving and provides exposure to a broad range of business models, making it a great place to build versatile skills and advance your career within the agency or in specialized roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an agency account manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Agency Account Manager, you need strong project management, client relations, and marketing knowledge, usually backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CRM systems, digital marketing platforms, and analytics tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for delivering client satisfaction, executing effective campaigns, and driving agency growth in a competitive environment.

  • Lead data integration projects that connect systems and datasets (e.g., API integrations, ETL routines, data pipelines, and data quality/validation coordination).

  • Get existing software deployments and/or integrations back on track by diagnosing root causes, re-baselining plans, tightening governance, and driving cross-team accountability.
  • Provide clear project reporting and maintain strong operational cadence (status, actions, decision tracking).

This hybrid position can be based at either our Calgary or Sherwood Park, AB location.

Your Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years' experience as a Project Manager delivering cross-functional initiatives
  • Demonstrated experience with software/system implementations (SaaS preferred)
  • Experience managing data integration workstreams (e.g., API, ETL, data migration, data warehouse/pipeline initiatives) in partnership with technical teams and vendors
  • Experience coordinating milestone-based deliverables and reporting requirements (e.g., grant-funded projects, sponsor reporting, or similar compliance timelines)
  • Proficient in MS Office Software Suite and related project software
  • Proven ability to recover or turn around delayed or complex project deployments
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and executive-ready reporting skills

Preferred

  • Experience working with not-for-profits (or public sector / mission-driven organizations)
  • Familiarity with governance structures, steering committees, and decision tracking
  • PMP, PRINCE2, Agile/Scrum certification (asset)
  • Comfort collaborating with vendors/contractors on integration requirements, acceptance criteria, and data validation
  • Experience preparing or coordinating grant interim/final reporting packages (asset)
