What does a Matlab Simulink mechanical engineer do?

A Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer uses Matlab and Simulink software to design, simulate, and analyze mechanical systems and control algorithms. They create models that represent mechanical components and systems, run simulations to predict performance, and optimize designs before physical prototypes are built. This role is commonly found in industries like automotive, aerospace, and robotics, where modeling and simulation help reduce development time and costs. The engineer also collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that the systems meet technical and safety requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Matlab Simulink mechanical engineer?

To thrive as a Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid grounding in mechanical engineering principles, system modeling, and simulation, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with Matlab, Simulink, and related toolboxes, along with familiarity with control systems or automotive modeling standards such as ISO 26262, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills help engineers collaborate on complex projects and convey technical concepts clearly. These skills ensure accurate modeling, efficient development processes, and successful integration of mechanical systems in multidisciplinary environments.

How does a Matlab Simulink mechanical engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer frequently works alongside electrical engineers, controls engineers, and software developers to design and simulate complex mechanical systems. Collaboration usually involves participating in design reviews, sharing simulation results to inform hardware decisions, and integrating models with other engineering domains. Effective communication and regular meetings are key, as these engineers translate mechanical requirements into simulation models that must align closely with the work of other team members. This collaborative environment not only ensures the accuracy of the overall system but also provides opportunities to learn from diverse engineering perspectives.

What is the difference between Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMatlab Simulink Mechanical EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusModeling, simulation, and analysis of mechanical systems using Matlab SimulinkDesigning, developing, and testing mechanical components and systems
Required SkillsProficiency in Matlab/Simulink, mechanical engineering principles, system modelingCAD software, mechanical design, prototyping, and manufacturing knowledge
Work EnvironmentEngineering labs, simulation environments, software developmentDesign studios, manufacturing facilities, prototyping labs
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, robotics, control systemsConsumer products, machinery, industrial equipment

Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineers focus on system modeling and simulation, while Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on creating physical mechanical components. Both roles require a strong foundation in mechanical engineering but differ in their core tasks and tools used.

Job description

About the job

Mercor connects elite creative and technical talent with leading AI research labs. Headquartered in San Francisco, our investors include Benchmark, General Catalyst, Peter Thiel, Adam D'Angelo, Larry Summers, and Jack Dorsey.

Position: Mechanical Engineering Expert
Type: Contract
Compensation: $70–$80/hour
Location: Remote

Role Responsibilities

  • Construct enterprise mechanical engineering scenarios for complex product design cycles, multi-stakeholder design reviews, and manufacturing or regulatory certification processes at Fortune 500 accounts.
  • Build tasks across Fortune 500 product design and CAD modeling, thermal/fluid systems analysis, structural and stress analysis, manufacturing process engineering, and reliability/failure analysis.
  • Develop engineering scenarios using tools such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA, MATLAB/Simulink, and enterprise PLM systems (Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill) in Fortune 500 stacks.
  • Apply enterprise mechanical engineering methodologies (FEA/CFD simulation, DFM/DFA principles, Six Sigma/DFSS, GD&T standards) to produce reference design specifications, engineering analyses, and executive-level technical narratives.
  • Author rubrics that distinguish authentic enterprise mechanical engineering judgment from generic textbook or coursework-level recall.

Qualifications

Must-Have

  • 5+ years working as a mechanical engineer or engineering lead at a Fortune 500 industrial, automotive, aerospace, or manufacturing company (GE, Boeing, Caterpillar, Ford, Honeywell).
  • Direct ownership of Fortune 500-scale product designs, manufacturing processes, or engineering certification programs.
  • Fluency in enterprise mechanical engineering tooling and methodologies, plus understanding of how Fortune 500 safety standards, regulatory certification (ISO, FAA, FDA), and cross-functional design governance work.

Preferred

  • Prior rubric, engineering-training curriculum, or design documentation authorship.
