Matlab Programming information

What are some common challenges faced by Matlab programmers when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams?

Matlab Programmers often work alongside engineers, data scientists, and researchers, which can present challenges in aligning project goals and integrating code with other technologies. Effective communication is critical, as team members may have varying technical backgrounds and expectations. Additionally, Matlab code may need to interface with other programming languages or platforms, requiring adaptability and a solid understanding of interoperability. Regular meetings and clear documentation help ensure smooth collaboration and project success.

What is the difference between Matlab Programming vs Data Analyst?

AspectMatlab ProgrammingData Analyst
Required SkillsMatlab coding, mathematical modeling, algorithm developmentData analysis, statistical tools, data visualization
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, engineering firms, academiaBusiness, finance, healthcare, consulting
Common ToolsMatlab software, scripting, simulationExcel, SQL, Tableau, R, Python
Industry UsageEngineering, scientific research, automationBusiness intelligence, market analysis, reporting

Matlab Programmers focus on developing algorithms and simulations primarily in engineering and scientific contexts, while Data Analysts interpret data to inform business decisions using various statistical tools. Both roles require analytical skills but differ in tools and industry focus.

What is Matlab programming?

Matlab programming involves using the Matlab language and environment to perform numerical computation, data analysis, visualization, and algorithm development. Matlab is widely used by engineers, scientists, and researchers for tasks such as signal processing, machine learning, image processing, and control system design. The programming language is known for its ease of use, built-in mathematical functions, and extensive libraries, making it a preferred tool for prototyping and academic research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Matlab programmer?

To thrive as a MATLAB Programmer, you need strong skills in programming, numerical analysis, and mathematical modeling, often supported by a degree in engineering, mathematics, or computer science. Familiarity with MATLAB software, Simulink, and relevant toolboxes or certifications is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating on complex projects. These skills ensure accurate data analysis, efficient code development, and successful teamwork in technical environments.

Job description

Magna-Power Electronics (MPE), a Flemington, New Jersey based electronics manufacturer, we believe that world-class engineering starts with a great team. We're incredibly proud of the culture we've built, one that truly supports our people and has earned us award-winning workplace recognitions.
Now, as we continue to grow, we're looking for a Power Electronics Embedded Systems Engineer to join our family. At MPE your expertise won't just sit on a shelf; it will power the future. You'll be diving into exciting, globally impactful projects, shaping everything from electric vehicle powertrains and next-generation semiconductor fabrication to particle accelerators, cutting-edge energy research, and national defense. If you're looking for a place where your work matters and your team has your back, you've found it.
Summary:
In the role of Power Electronics Embedded Systems Engineer, you will be an important part of Magna-Power's R&D team, creating the controls and integrating them with power electronics for multi-kilowatt programmable DC power supplies. You'll model advanced control algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink, translate them into ultra-reliable C firmware on TI C2000 MCUs, and validate everything on custom PCBs you help design and debug. From concept through production, you'll collaborate closely with power-electronics, test, and manufacturing teams to deliver the next generation of high-performance power solutions. Given the complex nature of the products, there will be significant hands-on training and interaction with various Magna-Power teams.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Building and refining closed-loop control models in MATLAB/Simulink and auto-generation of production-ready C code.
  • Tuning digital compensators (PI/PID, state-space, predictive) for high-bandwidth control
  • Write, optimize, and document bare-metal C for TI C2000 and other 32-bit MCUs.
  • Developing low-level drivers (ADC, PWM, timers, SPI, I²C, UART, RS-485, CAN, Ethernet) with deterministic execution and interrupt-safe design.
  • Implementing high-resolution PWM strategies for hard-switched.
  • Interfacing firmware with gate-driver, current-sense, voltage-sense, and isolation circuitry
  • Characterizing converter efficiency, thermal performance, and dynamic response; iterate based on oscilloscope/logic-analyzer captures.
  • Designing 2- to 4-layer PCBs in Altium for mixed-signal and high-voltage layouts
  • Bring-up and debug prototypes with oscilloscopes, isolated differential probes, power analyzers, and high-bandwidth current probes.
  • Authoring automated Python/LabVIEW scripts for regression tests and production programming.
  • Generating detailed electrical specs, BOMs, and test plans; contribute to UL/IEC/CE compliance documentation and patent filings.
  • Leading design reviews, mentor junior engineers, and interface with suppliers and contract manufacturers to resolve DFM/DFA issues.
  • Supporting field-failure analysis and sustainment engineering for products in volume production.

Required Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Power Electronics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field (Required); Master's degree (Preferred)
  • Minimum of Five (5) plus years work experience in Power Electronics Engineering (Required)
  • Circuit modeling and simulation experience (Required); MATLAB, Simulink, Python (Preferred)
  • Experience with Texas Instrument microcontrollers (Required); C2000 (Preferred)
  • Experience with hardware design and schematic capture tools
  • Experience working with real-time operating systems
  • Experiencing working with communication protocols such as UART, SPI, and I2C
  • Exposure to Python programming
  • Exposure to laboratory communications (SCPI, Labview, etc.)
  • Familiarity with modern test equipment
  • Experience with software development processes (GIT, issues tracking, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Ability to learn new skills independently and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work onsite in Flemington, NJ Headquarters

Perks & Benefits
In addition to your competitive compensation, Magna-Power provides a comprehensive total rewards package designed to help you thrive:
  • Health & Wellness: Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage.
  • Financial Future: 401(k) plan with a competitive company match, plus Life/Supplemental insurance, Critical Illness & Accident plans, and FSA options.
