Matlab Internship information

What is a Matlab internship?

A Matlab Internship is a temporary, often entry-level position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience using Matlab, a high-level programming language and environment for numerical computing, data analysis, and visualization. Interns typically work on projects involving data modeling, simulation, algorithm development, or signal processing under the supervision of experienced engineers or researchers. These internships are common in industries such as engineering, finance, and research, helping interns build relevant technical skills and professional experience.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a Matlab internship?

During a Matlab Internship, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that involve data analysis, algorithm development, simulation, and visualization. Interns often assist with real-world research or engineering projects, supporting teams in fields such as signal processing, machine learning, or control systems. You’ll typically collaborate with experienced engineers and researchers, gaining hands-on experience in coding, testing, and documenting Matlab scripts or functions. This practical exposure helps build both your technical and teamwork skills, preparing you for future roles in engineering and analytics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Matlab intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Matlab Intern, you need a solid understanding of mathematics, programming fundamentals, and basic engineering or scientific principles, often supported by coursework or projects involving Matlab. Familiarity with Matlab software, Simulink, and data analysis or visualization tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication set top candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently developing, debugging, and presenting technical solutions to real-world problems in engineering or research environments.

What is the difference between Matlab Internship vs Data Analyst Internship?

AspectMatlab InternshipData Analyst Internship
Required SkillsMatlab programming, numerical analysis, engineering conceptsData analysis, Excel, SQL, statistical tools
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, engineering firms, tech companiesBusiness, finance, marketing sectors
Industry UsageEngineering, robotics, simulation projectsBusiness insights, reporting, data visualization

Matlab Internships focus on programming, simulation, and engineering applications using Matlab, while Data Analyst Internships emphasize data processing, analysis, and visualization skills. Both roles often require analytical skills but serve different industry needs and environments.

Job description

INTERN @ SPACEWORKS

Are you passionate about aerospace? Do you go above and beyond to solve difficult challenges?

SpaceWorks is seeking college student interns for the Spring 2027 (January - April, dates flexible) to support several of our functional engineering teams. We are seeking students with experience and interest in various areas of aerospace engineering. Preferred focus areas for Spring 2027  include aerodynamics, aerothermal, flight performance, and software development.

Interns will work within a small team of engineers on the design, development, testing, and evaluation future spacecraft, small satellites, reentry capsules, and hypersonic flight systems. We are passionate about what we do and we’re looking for someone with a keen interest in high-speed flight, aircraft, rockets, small satellites, and/or space exploration. We work with sponsors at the Department of War, NASA, and other organizations, partnering to develop a range of advanced technologies. Given the nature of our work, US Person status is required. The position is located 100% onsite at our Atlanta, GA office and is a seasonal, full-time (hourly) position.

**Application will close at 5pm on August 24th**

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Aerodynamic Design & Analysis:

  • Develop and optimize aerodynamic designs from concept development and requirements definition, through preliminary and detailed design... or whatever point in that process is happening during the internship.
  • Conduct detailed analysis to predict and enhance aerodynamic performance.
  • Utilize Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools along with lower-order methods for performance evaluation.
  • Evaluate impacts of configuration changes on performance of the vehicle.

Aerothermal Modeling:

  • Predict convective and radiative heating environments during ascent, atmospheric flight, and re-entry using CFD and engineering models.
  • Assess coupled aero-thermal-structural interactions and recommend design solutions for survivability and reliability.
  • Contribute to thermal environment definition for subsystem qualification and testing requirements.

Flight Performance:

  • Mass modeling and vehicle closure of aerospace vehicles and architectures
  • Trajectory design and optimization using 3-DOF trajectory tools
  • Multidisciplinary design optimization of aerospace systems

Software Development:

  • Develop engineering design and analysis software for aerospace vehicle systems (primarily relating to the propulsion, trajectory, and aerodynamics disciplines)
  • Support developments on our commercial off the shelf (COTS) products and custom code development for internal and external customers - learn more about a few of our products here - https://www.spaceworks.aero/software/

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR (ALL)

  • College student pursuing a degree (BS, MS, or PhD) in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
  • Involvement / leadership in organizations on campus, passion projects in the backyard, and strong GPA
  • Available 40 hours per week for Spring 2027 (January - April)
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Visio
  • Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Familiarity with the basic principles of version control systems
  • Engineering Fundamentals: Applies first-principles to simplify systems and perform rough sizing using hand calculations
  • Technical Documentation: Able to create and interpret engineering drawings and contribute to technical reports
  • Familiarity with modeling in languages such as Python and/or MATLAB
  • MUST be able to work in-person for the duration of the internship located in Atlanta, GA
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance
