What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mathematician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mathematician, you typically need strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a solid background in advanced mathematics, and at least a bachelor's degree (often a master's or PhD for research roles). Familiarity with mathematical modeling software, programming languages like Python or MATLAB, and statistical analysis tools is highly valuable. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and perseverance set standout professionals apart when explaining complex concepts or collaborating on interdisciplinary projects. These skills are essential for conducting accurate research, developing innovative solutions, and effectively sharing results in academic, scientific, or commercial settings.

What are some typical challenges math professionals face when working in a collaborative team environment?

Math professionals often work closely with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, such as engineers, scientists, or data analysts. A common challenge is communicating complex mathematical concepts in ways that are accessible and actionable for non-mathematicians. Additionally, balancing independent problem-solving with regular team collaboration can be demanding, as projects may require both deep focus and frequent coordination. Developing strong communication and teamwork skills is essential for success and advancement in math-related roles.

What do mathematicians do?

Mathematicians use advanced mathematical theories and techniques to solve practical problems in fields such as business, engineering, and the sciences. Their work often involves conducting research, analyzing data, developing mathematical models, and applying mathematical principles to real-world situations. Mathematicians may also work in academia, teaching and publishing scholarly articles, or in industry, contributing to technological and scientific advancements.

Job description

Thanks for your interest in Success Academy! Running a large, fast-growing, and high-performing network of public charter schools takes a village - families, children, teachers, staff and faculty, advocates, and supporters alike. We are growing fast in New York and expanding to Florida, and we would love to welcome you to our community! We work tirelessly every day to ensure children have access to a fun, rigorous, whole-child education regardless of zip code or economic status. When you join SA, you play a part in giving every student who walks through our doors a fair shot at reaching his or her potential.

As a Network Competitive Math Coach, you will play a pivotal role in strengthening our competitive math pipeline by preparing scholars to excel in prestigous regional and national competitions, such as MOEMS, AMC, NYML, AIME, USAMO, and HMMT.

The ideal candidate possesses deep mathematical expertise and a strong understanding of the competitive math landscape. They are fluent in advanced problem-solving techniques across algebra, number theory, combinatorics, geometry, and proof-writing. Preferably, they also have personal experience competing in high-level math contests and can translate that experience into structured, inspiring instruction for scholars.

This role requires someone who thrives in both structured school environments and high-level one-on-one coaching settings. You will cultivate a high-expectations, high-joy culture where scholars develop resilience, mathematical maturity, and confidence in tackling complex problems.

This hybrid role blends in-person, school-day instruction with evening remote coaching. From 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., you will work onsite at assigned schools, supporting competitive math programming, identifying high-potential scholars, and collaborating with school-based leaders. From 4:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., you will provide virtual private lessons, small-group coaching, and targeted competition preparation via Zoom.

We are seeking a driven, organized, and mission-aligned educator who is passionate about developing exceptional young mathematicians!

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or a related quantitative field required; advanced degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated success in advanced mathematics coursework
  • Personal experience competing in high-level math competitions (e.g., AMC/AIME/USAMO/HMMT or similar).
  • Preferred:
    • Meaningful positive competitive math experience — as a competitor, problem writer, or experienced coach to middle or high school scholars
    • Experience teaching or coaching in an environment where there was a culture of adult and scholar accountability

Skills:

  • Disciplined, structured, and logical thinker.
  • Deep content mastery across algebra, number theory, combinatorics, geometry, and proof-writing.
  • Strong familiarity with the structure, scoring, and preparation pathways for national math competitions.
  • Ability to be explicit about decision-making when solving complex, multi-step competition problems.
  • Ability to design curriculum, problem sets, mock contests, and targeted skill drills.
  • Strong data analysis skills to track scholar growth and adjust preparation strategies accordingly.
  • Ability to manage and motivate high-performing scholars in rigorous academic settings.
  • Exceptional communication skills to engage scholars, families, and school leaders.
  • Organized with high levels of attention to detail.
  • Ability to self-identify gaps in knowledge or skill and independently work to close them.
Key Responsibilities:
  • School-Based (In-Person):
    ○ Identify and develop high-potential scholars through push-in support, small-group instruction, and collaboration with math teachers.
    ○ Support school-based math teams and competition clubs.
    ○ Administer diagnostics and analyze scholar performance data to determine readiness and training pathways.
    ○ Partner with school leaders to strengthen competitive math culture and systems.
  • Remote Coaching (Virtual):
    ○ Deliver private and small-group competitive math lessons via Zoom.
    ○ Develop individualized preparation plans for scholars preparing for AMC 8/10/12, AIME, and beyond.
    ○ Lead advanced problem-solving sessions and proof-writing workshops.
    ○ Track scholar progress and communicate growth updates to families and school stakeholders.
  • Prepare scholars to qualify for and excel in advanced competitions, including AIME and USAMO-level problem solving.
    ○ Design and maintain a structured, vertically aligned training progression across grade levels.
○Foster scholar perseverance, intellectual curiosity, and enthusiasm for mathematical challenge.
○Ensure scholar safety and uphold Success Academy’s high standards of academic rigor and behavior in both in-person and virtual environments.
Additional Expectations:
  • Ability to commute between assigned school sites during in-person hours.
  • Ability to maintain a professional virtual teaching environment during remote hours.
  • Flexibility to support occasional weekend competitions or training sessions.
  • Collaborate with network and school-based teams to drive measurable competitive outcomes.
  • Uphold Success Academy’s standards for excellence, professionalism, and scholar achievement.
