Summary of Position:
The Math Center is seeking applicants for a tutor. The primary responsibility of a tutor is to support students to become more independent learners, be successful in college, and reach their goals. Tutors will meet with students to clarify and review concepts taught in class, explain processes and help students solve specific problems. The Level II position requires applicants to have completed MATH 220 with a B or better or have tested / placed above MATH 220.
The Math Tutor provides supplemental academic support through tutoring activities designed to reinforce course concepts and aid student mastery of course content.
This position supports, but does not replace, instructional faculty.
This position is not eligible for remote work. All compensated work must be performed from an approved university location. The position may include virtual delivery of tutoring to students; however, virtual delivery must occur while the student employee is physically working from an approved university location.
Student employees in this role are not instructors and may not perform duties reserved for instructional faculty, including creating or revising syllabi, designing or assigning graded coursework, assessing learning for grades, grading student work, managing Canvas or other LMS course functions, delivering required instruction on behalf of faculty, substituting for faculty, making course policy decisions, or completing compensated work already assigned to instructional faculty. The role is limited to supplemental academic support, facilitation of learning activities, and student-success support.
Position Requirements: - Must have overall GPA of 3.00 or better.
- Must have completed MATH 220 with a B or better OR tested / placed above MATH 220.
- Excellent communication skills and organization.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: - Level II Tutor will tutor students in any of the following courses: MATH 115, 116, 120, 126, 130, 216, 220, and 251.
- Provide subject-specific content to help students through drop-in assistance.
- Recognize the different learning styles and student preferences.
- Use active listening skills to determine content needs and pace of tutoring.
- Use listening and questioning skills to diagnose student needs and monitor progress.
- Help students become more confident, successful and self-directed learners.
- Provide direct assistance in the use of learning materials for student success.
- Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as needed.
-Consult regularly with instructional faculty on course content and methodologies.
