Job description

Content Producer and Social Media Manager

Gray Area is a San Francisco-based nonprofit cultural incubator. We are hiring a Content Producer and Social Media Manager to maintain an engaging public presence through evocative visual content, an authoritative voice, and powerful storytelling This role keeps Gray Area’s social channels and program communications running week to week. You will write, schedule, and publish posts and updates across platforms, and you’ll be hands‑on producing short‑form video content. You’ll also engage daily with audiences and peer accounts to support reach, help roll out marketing campaigns, and handle the operational basics that make communications work: template-based newsletter, web, and ticketing updates with strong QA.

Reports to: Creative Media Lead

Location: In-person in San Francisco

Responsibilities
  • Write, schedule, and publish social posts and Stories across platforms
  • Capture original photo and video content (spotlights, quick interviews, behind-the-scenes, occasional event documentation,...) to support short‑form publishing and promotional assets
  • Edit and publish 1-2 videos per week from your own and/or curator-provided footage: select clips, assemble the cut, add captions and text, format for each platform, export, and post
  • Produce social media assets for programs and campaigns: simple graphics in Figma, short clips, Story frames, carousels, and lightweight promotional edits
  • Stay current on platform trends and test new content approaches to improve reach and engagement, while keeping output aligned with Gray Area’s voice and priorities
  • Daily community engagement (comments, DMs, and proactive interaction with relevant accounts)
  • Build and QA web pages, newsletters, ticketing setups, and listings from templates
  • Maintain accurate details across channels (dates, times, links, credits, accessibility basics)
  • Support member communications and member events
  • Assist with audience list hygiene and segmentation as needed
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in social media publishing, content production, or communications operations
  • Strong writing and editing skills with excellent attention to detail (writing sample required)
  • Short‑form video editing experience (clean cuts, captions, exports for multiple platforms)
  • Comfort working from templates, playbooks, and repeatable processes
  • Strong operational follow-through: ability to meet deadlines independently, proactively anticipate project needs, and maintain workflow momentum with minimal supervision
  • Resourceful problem-solver who can troubleshoot issues, propose solutions, and elevate clearly when needed
  • Experience publishing and managing content on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and collaborate across teams
  • Basic HTML familiarity for updating web pages
Tools
  • Familiarity with WordPress, Figma, Mailchimp, Ticketure, Airtable, and Adobe Creative Suite is helpful.
Schedule
  • This role is primarily in person in San Francisco. Occasional evening and weekend work may be needed for time-sensitive publishing and event coverage, balanced elsewhere in the week.
Benefits and Salary:
  • 60-65k Salary based on experience
  • 80% employer contribution toward Silver level health plan
  • Unlimited vacation policy in collaboration with the team
  • Monday-Friday work schedule, with attendance at events as needed

Since our inception in 2008, Gray Area has established itself as a singular hub for critically engaging with technology and culture in the Bay Area, while also reaching a global audience. Through our platform of public events, education, and research programs, we empower a diverse community of creative practitioners with the agency to create meaningful social impact through category-defying work.

We are an equal opportunity employer committed to building a culturally diverse team. Candidates from groups generally underrepresented in our field are especially encouraged to apply.
