Work EnvironmentUniversities, research institutions, academiaUniversities, colleges, sometimes community colleges
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in higher education and researchPrimarily in higher education, often teaching undergraduate courses
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding academic roles, career paths, qualificationsComparing teaching positions, qualifications, and responsibilities

Math Professors typically hold a doctorate and focus on research and advanced teaching at universities. Math Lecturers often have a master's degree and primarily teach undergraduate courses. Both roles are found in higher education, but Math Professors usually engage in research, while Math Lecturers focus on instruction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Math Professor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Professor, you need deep expertise in mathematics, a relevant advanced degree (often a Ph.D.), and a strong track record in research and teaching. Familiarity with mathematical software such as MATLAB, LaTeX, and statistical analysis tools is typically required, along with experience using learning management systems. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help professors effectively engage students and contribute to academic communities. These competencies are crucial for fostering student understanding, advancing mathematical research, and maintaining high educational standards.

What does a Math Professor do?

A Math Professor teaches mathematics courses at the college or university level, conducts academic research, and mentors students. They are responsible for developing curricula, delivering lectures, creating and grading assignments and exams, and guiding students through complex mathematical concepts. In addition to teaching, Math Professors often publish scholarly articles, participate in academic conferences, and may supervise graduate student research. Their work helps advance the field of mathematics and prepares students for careers in academia, industry, or education.

What are some common challenges Math Professors face when balancing research and teaching responsibilities?

Math Professors often juggle the dual demands of delivering high-quality instruction while maintaining an active research agenda. Balancing classroom preparation, grading, and student support with the time-intensive process of conducting original research and publishing can be challenging, especially during peak academic periods. Many professors find that strong organizational skills and clear communication with department colleagues help manage these competing priorities. Additionally, collaborating with graduate students or research groups can maximize productivity and foster a supportive academic environment.

Job description

About the Role:

SiSTEM is hiring experienced AP tutors to work with motivated students and families in the Houston area.
This is not a volume tutoring gig. Our tutors work as trusted academic partners with families who value expertise, helping students master AP-level content, develop strong exam strategies, and earn the scores they need for college credit and competitive admissions.

If you can tutor any of the following, we want to hear from you:
AP Math and Computer Science:
  • AP Calculus AB.

AP Science:

AP Exam Preparation Support:

  • Full course tutoring for students currently enrolled in an AP class.
  • AP exam review and intensive prep leading up to exam day.
  • Free-response question (FRQ) strategy and practice.
  • Multiple-choice strategy and pacing.
  • AP score goal setting based on target colleges and credit policies.
  • Pre-AP readiness for students preparing to take their first AP course.
  • AP course selection guidance for students building a competitive transcript.

You do not need to tutor every AP subject. If you specialize in AP Chemistry only, or AP English Language only, or AP US History only, or anything in between, we want you on our team.

About SiSTEM:

SiSTEM is an academic guidance platform that builds personalized roadmaps for students in grades K–12. Every student on SiSTEM has a plan. Tutors are a key part of that plan and are matched to students based on specific needs, not random availability.

We started as a tutoring agency in Texas, grew to 300+ tutors serving 10,000+ students, and are now launching a platform that gives educators better tools, better-matched students, and the ability to build a real client base.
What You'll Do:
  • Work one-on-one with students to provide focused AP-level instruction in your subject area.
  • Help students develop deeper conceptual understanding, not just memorize content for the exam.
  • Build critical thinking, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills specific to the AP exam format.
  • Coach students through free-response questions, document-based questions, lab-based questions, or other exam-specific formats depending on the subject.
  • Identify and close content gaps that are holding students back from higher scores.
  • Help students manage the workload and rigor of AP coursework alongside their other classes.
  • Align your sessions with each student's broader academic roadmap through SiSTEM's planning tools.
  • Communicate with families on progress and strategy when appropriate.
  • Maintain high standards of preparation and professionalism.
What We're Looking For:

We are selective about who joins the SiSTEM team.

Strong candidates typically have:
  • 3+ years of teaching, tutoring, or academic mentoring experience in at least one AP subject.
  • Deep content expertise and strong familiarity with the AP exam format, scoring rubrics, and question types in your subject area.
  • Experience working with motivated students who are aiming for 4s and 5s.
  • A track record of helping students improve their AP exam scores or succeed in AP coursework.
  • Clear, patient communication and the ability to make rigorous content feel manageable.
  • Professional reliability.
Bonus: current or former AP classroom teachers, AP exam readers or graders, college professors who tutor high school students, educators with advanced degrees in their subject area, tutors who can coach across multiple AP subjects.

Why Tutors Join SiSTEM:

  • You set your own rates. And you keep 100% of what you earn.
  • Matched with students who fit your expertise. No random assignments. Students are matched to you based on AP subject, learning needs, and your teaching strengths.
  • Bring your current students with you. Already have clients? Add them to the platform for free. Use SiSTEM's tools to manage your existing students alongside new ones at no extra cost.
  • Families are already invested. SiSTEM parents are paying for a plan. They're engaged, responsive, and serious about their child's growth.
  • We handle the marketing. You don't have to find clients. We bring families to you.
  • Tools to manage your business. Scheduling, session tracking, and student relationship tools built into the platform.
  • Build a long-term client base. Students on SiSTEM stay for years, not weeks.
