What are math internships?

Math internships are temporary positions, usually for students or recent graduates, that provide hands-on experience in applying mathematical concepts and skills in real-world settings. These internships can be found in various industries such as finance, technology, data analysis, engineering, and research. Interns typically work on projects involving data analysis, mathematical modeling, or problem-solving, and they gain valuable professional experience and networking opportunities. Math internships help bridge the gap between academic studies and professional careers, making them a great way to build practical skills and enhance a resume.

What types of projects or tasks are typically assigned to math interns during their internship?

Math interns often assist with data analysis, statistical modeling, or research to support ongoing projects within their team. Depending on the organization, you might work on real-world problems such as optimizing business processes, analyzing large datasets, or developing algorithms. Collaboration with professionals from other departments, such as engineering or finance, is common, providing exposure to practical applications of mathematical concepts. These projects help interns build both technical and soft skills while gaining hands-on experience relevant to their future careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a math internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Math Internship, you generally need a solid understanding of mathematical concepts, analytical thinking, and coursework in mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software, programming languages such as Python or R, and tools like Excel is often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and willingness to learn are standout soft skills for this position. These skills are crucial for successfully contributing to projects, communicating findings, and developing practical experience in a professional setting.

Our deep industry expertise and end-to-end capabilities make us the ideal partner for companies seeking cutting-edge automation, process control, and engineered systems.

Who We Are Looking For

You're an early-career mechanical engineer eager to build real skills on the machines that make things happen. Whether you're a recent graduate with proven internship or co-op experience or you have a few years of machine design work behind you, you're motivated to learn from expert engineers and grow into increasing responsibility over time.

You enjoy the technical work-turning ideas into 3D models and detailed drawings, running calculations to make sure a design holds up, and solving problems methodically. You're comfortable asking questions, curious about emerging methods and tools, and you take safety seriously whether you're at your desk, in a fabrication shop, or on a client site. If you value continuous learning and collaboration, this is a strong place to start your career.

What You Get To Do
  • Design and develop mechanical machine components and assemblies with guidance from senior engineers, contributing from concept through completion.
  • Create and modify 3D models and 2D drawings in SolidWorks.
  • Perform engineering calculations and design analysis to ensure technical accuracy.
  • Prepare and maintain drawing sets and design documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews, incorporate feedback, and help identify and report safety risks.
  • Research technical challenges and propose solutions with support from experienced engineers.
  • Learn and apply company design standards and engineering guidelines.
  • Support HSE initiatives and promote a strong safety culture across every project phase.
  • Collaborate across teams, vendors, and clients, and travel occasionally to project sites.
What You Bring To The Team

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or related field) or equivalent experience.
  • 1-5 years of machine design experience with exposure to industrial automation elements such as custom tooling, robots, servos, and position- or presence-sensing equipment. New graduates with relevant internship or co-op experience considered.
  • 1+ years of SolidWorks experience.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and mathematical skills (statistics, algebra, calculus).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including with non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in English and a developing ability to interpret PFDs, P&IDs, and similar documentation.
  • A strong commitment to safety and a proactive approach to recognizing hazards.

Preferred

  • Exposure to SolidWorks FEA and CFD tools.
  • EIT certification or progress toward a P.E. license.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, Lean, Six Sigma, or similar quality/continuous improvement systems.
  • Familiarity with project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project, Deltek Vision), OSHA regulations, or additional languages.

The base salary range for this position is $65,000- $100,000 per year. This range represents the Company's good faith estimate of the base compensation for this role at the time of posting.  Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for annual incentive compensation and/or long-term incentives, subject to Company plans. The Company offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, retirement, paid time off, and other benefits.
