To thrive as a Math Intern, you need a solid foundation in mathematics, problem-solving abilities, and often enrollment in or completion of a relevant degree program. Familiarity with statistical software, programming languages like Python or MATLAB, and tools such as Excel is commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and interpret complex data. These skills are crucial for contributing to projects, gaining practical experience, and supporting organizational goals through quantitative analysis.

What types of projects or tasks can a Math Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Math Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects, such as analyzing data sets, developing mathematical models, or assisting with research studies. Your daily tasks may include running statistical analyses, creating visualizations, and collaborating with other team members to solve real-world problems. Math Interns often work closely with experienced mathematicians, data scientists, or engineers, providing an excellent opportunity to learn industry-specific applications of mathematics and build practical skills. Additionally, you may be asked to present your findings to the team, helping you develop both technical and communication abilities.

What are Math Interns?

Math Interns are students or recent graduates who gain practical experience in mathematics by working under the supervision of professionals in fields such as research, finance, data analysis, or education. Their responsibilities often include assisting with data collection and analysis, conducting mathematical modeling, and supporting ongoing projects. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience, helps interns apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios, and can serve as a pathway to full-time positions in mathematics-related careers.

Job description

Data Science Intern at Rundoo

Our mission is to empower independent supply stores with best-in-class technology. Think of your local hardware store or mom-and-pop nursery—these are our clients. From paint to lumber to flooring, over 200,000 such stores across the country sell over $1T of building materials annually using outdated, on-premises systems. We're aiming to help them modernize so that they can continue to thrive.

Backed by leading investors including Bessemer and CRV, we've raised $18M across three rounds and are growing quickly. Our team is made up of builders, sellers, and industry veterans with a shared goal: to bring modern technology to an overlooked industry.

You'll be based out of Chicago / Chicagoland and support the data science and revenue operations in building an efficient and scalable GTM muscle. You'll report to Rundoo's Head of Data Science, Amrit, and work with members from our go-to-market team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on leveraging data-driven techniques and programming to power insights and drive growth at a fast-paced startup. You'll be based in the Chicago office.

What You'll Do as a Data Science Intern at Rundoo
  • Analyze data on product, sales and GTM hypotheses.
  • Translate product, sales and GTM requests into data problems & execute on them.
  • Build utilities to orchestrate and connect data across different tools and services.
Requirements
  • Based in Chicago or surrounding suburbs with flexibility to work from our office.
  • You are comfortable working in Python and using Git to track your work (~ 1 year of experience with these tools). We expect you to be familiar with Pandas and writing performant code (e.g. vectorized operations, parallel processing).
  • You document your work well, in a manner that support reproducibility of your work.
  • You are able to learn how to work with different APIs or tools on your own.
Bonus Points
  • Experience in research environments using data to answer real-world problems.
Compensation
  • Salary: $1,200/week, 40hrs/week
Interview Process
  1. 20-minute screening call with Amanda – An initial conversation with our recruiter to get to know each other better.
  2. 30-minute introductory call with Amrit – A discussion about a past project, your working style, and your approach to problem-solving.
  3. 90-minute collaborative project session with Amrit – Partner on preparing a dataset to support data-driven decision-making.
  4. 15-minute final call (remote) – A closing conversation with our CEO.
About Our Founders
  1. Andrew (CTO): studied computer science & humanities at Stanford; worked as a software engineer and head of engineering at Apple & Anova; danced with the SF ballet (where he met his wife)!
  2. Nick (CEO): studied math & computer science at Stanford; worked as a trader at Bridgewater & Citadel and as a PM at Google & Enigma; distantly related to the founder of the Hershey company
How We've Fundraised

We've raised $18m across three rounds:

  1. A $2m pre-seed led by Kent Bennett at Bessemer with participation from Plug & Play, Quiet Capital, and Sequoia.
  2. A $5m seed led by Caitlin Bolnick Rellas at CRV.
  3. An $11m series A led again by Bessemer and CRV.
