Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent
SUPERVISES: Curriculum and Instruction Staff
FLSA Status: Exempt
COMPENSATION: Based on Central Office Administration Pay Structure
WORK CALENDAR: 260 Days
STANDARD HOURS: 8 Hours or more per day
CORP STATUS: Certified Administrator
POSITION PURPOSE:
To serve as the Director of Elementary and perform the appropriate essential functions
and responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide direction to the Assistant Superintendent in the achievement of short and long-term educational goals of the school corporation.
- Assist the instructional leadership of the district.
- Assume direct responsibility for the development, implementation, and assessment of the elementary curriculum, including curriculum writing, textbook adoption, and student assessment.
- Act as Corporation Test Coordinator (CTC)
- Develop and distribute elementary courses of study and curriculum guides.
- Develop procedures and programs to analyze elementary-level data from district-wide standardized testing programs to be shared with administrators.
- Analyze and appraise the academic performance of elementary students and recommend appropriate and corrective action when necessary.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent to ensure curriculum and instructional articulation and focus, K-12.
- Assist with planning, conducting, or arranging for staff development opportunities in assigned areas, as well as informing staff of opportunities to participate in available conferences and workshops.
- Direct the elementary school improvement process under PL 221 and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)..
- Supervise grant initiatives at the elementary level.
- Apply and monitor the Title II Grant.
- Support elementary math and ELA coaches.
- Assist the Assistant Superintendent with the identification process of students to be included in the High Ability Program area.
- Coordinate externally-funded programs applicable to assigned areas of supervision.
- Coordinate new teacher orientation.
- Serves as the elementary -level resource person and "daily operations manager" for teachers, administrators, non-certified staff, parents and the community.
- Provide district oversight for the approval and functioning of student clubs and extracurricular activities for elementary buildings.
- Work with building administrators to coordinate programs and activities for at-risk students at the elementary level.
- Serve as a resource person for teachers, administrators, non-certified personnel, and the community in improving educational program offerings and achievement for students who are at-risk of dropping out of school at the elementary level.
- Assist in the coordination of externally funded programs, as well as assist in the preparation of grants and required reports for alternative education at the elementary level.
- Provide leadership and administration of the preschool through grade 5 planning of district-wide professional development, including in-service program planning designed to support implementation and evaluation of newly developed curricula, state/federal mandates, and or corporate goals.
- Recommend appropriate equipment and materials for assigned programs.
- Assist in the selection, assignment, evaluation, and transfer of personnel in assigned programs.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of the elementary summer school.
- Assist in the assessment of assigned programs and make appropriate recommendations for implementation, expansion, or deletion of programs.
- Maintain close liaison with the Indiana Department of Education in related areas.
- Coordinate cooperative efforts with educational with educational support organizations.
- Engage in professional activities conducive to improving personal performance and knowledge.
- Represent the schools in community affairs.
- Perform student health and safety related tasks necessary for a particular students or students including, but not limited to, health care services related to students with diabetes, basic life support, therapeutic, and sanitary service, and taking other actions reasonably necessary to prevent harm or injury to a student as determined by the student's Individual Health Plan (IHP), Individual Education Plan (IEP), or 504 Plan.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Assistant Superintendent and/or Superintendent.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Highly developed technology skills including PC based software and the ability to communicate electronically.
- Strong organization skills in order to manage multiple issues simultaneously combined with ability to effectively prioritize.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills in order to relate to students, parents, staff, administrators and community. Ability to negotiate effective working relationships, and develop positive resolutions to conflict. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of the new Indiana elementary curricular requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Master's degree with valid Indiana Administrator's license or eligible to receive an Indiana Administrator's license or permit with certification as Director of Curriculum.
- Experience: Five (5) years of teaching experience with a minimum of three (3) years building principal level experience.
EXPECTATIONS OF EMPLOYEE:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit approximately 80 percent of work time.
- Stand and walk 20 percent of work time.
- Lift up to 30 pounds approximately 5 percent of work time, pull, push, and stoop.
- Requires the ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends.
- Involves limited travel.
