Job description

Math Mentor (Part-time; ONLINE)
American Heritage School is a mission-driven, faith-centered private school aligned with the teachings and values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, seeking a part-time (5-10 hours a week) Math Mentor who is committed to academic excellence and student development in a faith-centered environment. AHS's math program is powered by Math Academy, an adaptive, mastery-based online platform that personalizes instruction for each student across five courses: Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus. The Math Mentor supports students working through this platform by leading structured tutoring sessions, providing individualized guidance, and helping ensure steady progress toward mastery. This role is designed for an educator who is passionate about helping students grow intellectually, spiritually, and socially while supporting the school's mission and values. The ideal candidate will create a learning environment that inspires confidence in math, encourages personal growth, and reflects Christian principles in daily mentoring and interactions.
About Our Math Program
AHS's math curriculum is powered by Math Academy, an adaptive, mastery-based learning platform that customizes instruction to each student's pace and ability. Students progress through five sequential courses (Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus), building a strong mathematical foundation through daily practice, targeted review, and continuous mastery checks. Rather than a traditional lecture-based classroom, the program blends independent, platform-guided learning with structured group tutoring and individualized mentoring, allowing each student to move at a pace suited to their needs while receiving consistent support and accountability from their mentor.
Nature of the Role
This position is considered a faith-forming role within the school community. In addition to providing strong academic instruction, the mentor is expected to actively support, model, and teach principles consistent with the Mission and values of AHS and the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The role requires a mentor who can positively influence students through both instruction and personal example, fostering a classroom culture grounded in faith, respect, and discipleship.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates should possess a bachelor's degree or equivalent, be comfortable with math through at least the Pre-Calculus level, and have at least two years of mentoring or tutoring experience, preferably within a formal educational setting. Successful applicants will demonstrate a genuine love for mentoring youth, strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to explain math concepts clearly and adapt to each student's needs, as well as a commitment to actively participate in and contribute to a faith-based educational environment aligned with the teachings and values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Candidates should also bring enthusiasm, consistency, and professionalism to their sessions while remaining committed to ongoing professional growth and comfortable using online, adaptive learning platforms such as Math Academy to support student learning.
Faith and Mission Responsibilities
In addition to academic responsibilities, mentors at AHS are expected to integrate faith-based principles and moral reasoning into classroom instruction where appropriate, serve as an example of Christian character and discipleship to students, support and uphold the spiritual mission of the school through daily interactions with students and colleagues, participate in school-wide devotionals, prayer, and other faith-centered activities, and respond thoughtfully to student questions related to faith, values, and moral decision-making in a manner consistent with the school's mission.
Professional Expectations
Candidates should be professional in appearance and demeanor and willing and able to serve as ambassadors for the AHS Mission, Honor Code, and Diversity Statement. Personal conduct, public statements, and online presence, both on and off campus, are expected to reflect and support the school's religious mission and educational purpose.
Mentoring Responsibilities
The Math Mentor should bring a warm, energetic, and engaging presence that helps students feel supported, challenged, and inspired. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong subject-matter knowledge across Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus, along with the ability to explain concepts in a clear, organized, and encouraging way. The Math Mentor leads structured math tutoring sessions each Monday and Thursday and provides individualized, one-on-one math mentoring sessions with students throughout the week, helping them work through Math Academy's five courses at a pace suited to their needs. Mentors should foster confidence and persistence in math, help students work through misunderstandings as they arise, and monitor each student's progress within the platform to ensure steady advancement toward mastery.
Communication and Organization
Candidates should demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and maintain purposeful, well-organized tutoring and mentoring sessions that support effective learning. Responsibilities include grading student work when needed, monitoring student progress within the Math Academy platform, and maintaining collaborative, timely, and positive communication with students, parents, and staff regarding progress, concerns, and next steps. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are essential for supporting student success and keeping accurate records across all five courses. Experience working with students who have specific learning disabilities is considered beneficial but is not required.
Extracurricular Opportunities
Applicants are encouraged to share any interest or experience in supporting AHS extracurricular athletics programs. AHS prefers to fill coaching and activity roles with employees who have both the interest and skills to mentor students in these areas.
Position Details
This part-time position (5-10 hours a week) includes math tutoring sessions each Monday and Thursday, plus flexible one-on-one mentoring time throughout the week, and is available for the August 2026 through June 30, 2027 school year.
Important Note to Applicants
AHS is a mission-driven, faith-centered, and patriotic school. Employment at AHS requires alignment with and support of the school's religious mission and values. Individuals who are unable or unwilling to support these expectations should carefully consider whether this position is a good fit.
