Materials Engineering Internships information

What is a materials engineering internship?

Materials Engineering Internships are short-term work experiences that allow students or recent graduates to gain practical knowledge in the field of materials science and engineering. Interns typically assist with research, testing, and analysis of materials like metals, polymers, ceramics, or composites, often working under the supervision of experienced engineers. These internships provide hands-on exposure to laboratory techniques, industry software, and real-world engineering challenges, helping participants build their skills and prepare for future careers in materials engineering.

What do materials engineering interns do?

As a materials engineering intern, you'll typically work on projects related to materials selection, testing, and characterization to support product development or manufacturing processes. You may assist in preparing and analyzing samples in a laboratory setting, collect and interpret data, and collaborate with engineers to troubleshoot materials-related challenges. Interns often contribute to report writing, documentation, and presentations, gaining exposure to real-world engineering workflows. Team environments are collaborative, offering mentorship and opportunities to interact with professionals from other disciplines such as mechanical or chemical engineering.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a materials engineering intern?

To thrive as a Materials Engineering Intern, you need a solid understanding of materials science fundamentals, laboratory skills, and coursework in fields like chemistry, physics, and engineering. Familiarity with technical tools such as scanning electron microscopes (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and data analysis software is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork distinguish top candidates in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for contributing to research, supporting engineering projects, and ensuring the integrity of materials testing and analysis.

The Opportunity

Your Impact Starts Here

Are you ready to tackle some of the most complex and rewarding challenges in the industry? In this role, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with brilliant minds and contribute to high-profile projects that are changing the landscape of our world.

As a Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training based in Lethbridge, Alberta, you will work with our Prairies & North Lab & Materials team to support field investigations, analysis, design, and construction services for transportation, municipal, industrial, environmental, and community development projects. Guided by experienced professionals, you will combine field observations, laboratory data, and engineering principles to help clients understand soil, rock, and groundwater conditions and deliver safe, practical, and sustainable solutions across the Prairies and Canada's North.

Your Impact

  • Contribute to planning and delivering field investigations and construction monitoring, including boreholes, test pits, in-situ testing, and soil, rock, and groundwater sampling.

  • Analyze field observations and laboratory data to turn ground conditions into practical recommendations for foundations, earthworks, slopes, retaining structures, pavements, and buried infrastructure.

  • Produce clear field records, calculations, figures, technical memoranda, and report content that support informed client decisions on scope, schedule, and investment.

  • Collaborate with environmental, structural, transportation, water, and civil teams to integrate ground engineering insights into resilient project designs.

  • Advance sustainable geotechnical solutions by considering constructability, materials, environmental outcomes, and long-term performance.

  • Strengthen safe, high-quality project delivery while growing your technical capability through mentorship, project meetings, and varied assignments across the Prairies and the North.

The Skills That Set You Apart

  • A bachelor's degree in civil, geological, or geotechnical engineering, with coursework or project experience focused on Lab & Materials.

  • Registration, or eligibility to register, as an Engineer-in-Training with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

  • Hands-on geotechnical experience through co-op, internship, academic fieldwork, or early-career projects involving investigation planning, soil or rock logging, sampling, or construction monitoring.

  • Foundational knowledge of soil mechanics, foundations, earthworks, slope stability, groundwater, and laboratory testing, with the ability to interpret logs, laboratory results, and monitoring records.

  • Ability to prepare organized calculations and technical documentation using Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD, GeoStudio, gINT, or comparable analysis, modelling, or drafting tools is an asset.

  • Readiness to contribute in both field and office settings, travel to sites across the Prairies and the North, work outdoors in variable conditions, follow site-specific safety requirements, and maintain a valid driver's licence.
