Role Purpose
As a Senior Controls Engineer within Corning's Mobile Consumer Electronics Division, you will lead the design, development, integration, and deployment of advanced automation, motion control, robotics, and process control systems that improve manufacturing performance across a global footprint. This role serves as a key technical leader for capital projects, new equipment introductions, and technology transfers from R&D into high-volume manufacturing. Working closely with process, quality, metrology, and manufacturing teams, you will drive productivity, reliability, and process capability improvements through innovative controls, automation, and data-driven manufacturing solutions.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
  • Lead engineering projects focused on motion systems, automation integration, process controls, material handling and periodically measurement system integrations.
  • Provide support and implement PLC based machine / motion control systems, system integration, sensors, electro-mechanical devices and robotics
  • Oversee and lead the implementation of hardware for the control and safety systems
  • Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated process equipment systems to Corning's plants on-time, on-budget, and that satisfy performance measures
  • Dramatically advance productivity gains through control software and hardware design implementations.
  • Develop and improve capability of manufacturing systems for seamless part tracking, measurements, process control and data analysis. (SCADA).
  • Development and deployment of process and automation controls on global scale
  • Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer's requirements as well as applicable national and international equipment safety standards.
  • Mentor and promote controls development best practices.
  • Participate in the development of control architectures, control functional specifications, design and test plans and system integration requirements that will satisfy process and manufacturing requirements, as well as customer requirements.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing teams to ensure the smooth transfer of technology from development to production.
  • Liaison with division quality, process and metrology teams to ensure continuous improvement and customer compliance
  • Lead obsolescence projects aimed at increasing fundamental process capability within the division controls function.
  • Close interaction with Process, Quality and Measurement functions.

Required Experience/Skills:
  • Experience in engineering roles, with a track record of leading projects in automation, process controls and motion systems.
  • Experience designing and programming of PLC systems primarily Rockwell, Siemens and Omron.
  • Experience with HMI and SCADA systems primarily FT View, Optix, Ignition, iFix
  • Well versed in electrical engineering principles.
  • Capability to design, develop and deliver fully integrated machine and motion control, automation, and process machine systems to manufacturing.
  • Familiarity of logic-based programming. PLC and IEC base programming structure including ladder logic, function blocks, structured text, and sequential flowchart desirable.
  • Hands-on experience in transferring technology from development to manufacturing environments, ensuring seamless integration and operational success.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues efficiently.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of effectively documenting processes and presenting technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Experience designing and implementing industrial communication technologies (Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, Profinet)

Travel Requirements:
  • 30-40% travel (domestic/international)
  • 1 day to several week trips are typical.
  • Role based in Harrodsburg, KY or Corning, NY

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
  • 40 hrs/week
  • Expected to work hours required to successfully deliver project and support requirements.

Required Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology (with a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience)
  • 7-10 years in industrial controls

Desired Experience/Skills:
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C#, Python, HTML, MATLAB
  • Ability to work collaboratively with R&D teams to explore new technologies and drive continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of algorithms for measurements and image processing systems.
  • Project management skills (e.g. scoping, budgeting, timelines MS Project)
  • Knowledge of equipment engineering, process support and debug
  • Ability to lead technical teams as part of a larger project
  • Familiarity with Fanuc and ABB robot programming

The range for this position is $105,994.00 - $145,743.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
