Job description

SUMMARY: Receive, inspect, unload, and store raw and finished goods material within the Business Unit. Safely move materials from one location to another, ensuring bar lines and workstations are supplied with materials via overhead cranes, combi forklifts, or other lifting equipment. Maintain cleanliness and organization in work areas, keeping materials neatly stacked. Material Handlers will be cross-trained in other business areas, interact with other business units and truck drivers, and load transportation trucks safely. Report any near misses or incidents immediately and be subject to post-accident/post-incident drug testing. Continuous training is required, and Material Handlers are also responsible for training new hires. Work is fast-paced, requiring individuals to work independently, diligently, and safely. Work is reviewed by a supervisor or senior worker to ensure quality and accuracy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Material Handling: Safely move materials from one location to another using overhead cranes, combi forklifts, or other lifting equipment. Ensure that bar lines and workstations are consistently supplied with the necessary materials.
  • Area Maintenance: Keep personal and common work areas clean, organized, and neatly stacked. Dispose of scrap materials as necessary.
  • Receiving and Storage: Receive, inspect, and unload deliveries of all supplies and raw materials. Accurately complete all receiving transactions and interact with the ERP system.
  • Inventory Management: Organize and maintain raw material storage, processed bars, racks, panels, and other inventory items. Stage material as needed in work centers and place finished material in proper inventory locations.
  • Stock Replenishment: Replenish stock materials throughout the workday as needed.
  • Loading and Shipping: Safely load transportation trucks and prepare products for shipment on flatbed trailers or into dry vans. Perform basic shipping functions including identifying, labeling, bundling, and organizing orders for shipment with zero defects.
  • Safety and Reporting: Recognize and report all quality issues, near misses, and incidents immediately. Be subject to post-accident/post-incident drug testing. Comply with all operating procedures, instructions, and safety rules.
  • Training: Participate in continuous training and train new hires. Assist with periodic cycle counts and perform other duties as assigned by supervision.
  • Communication: Effectively communicate and work well with others, including during shift changes. Interact with other business units and truck drivers as needed.
EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, AND PROFICIENCIES:
  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience: Candidates with one or more years of prior material handling experience with a steel or aluminum manufacturer are preferred.
  • Skills: Ability to safely demonstrate material handling with tow motors and overhead cranes (Jib crane and Gantry crane experience is a plus). Ability to read and understand both metric and standard tape measures; perform basic arithmetic operations. Must be able to use hand and power tools safely and effectively. Possess strong written and verbal communication skills and be a driven team player who takes initiative to learn and grow.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will encounter repetitive movement tasks, which require standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, grasping, pushing, and pulling material of various sizes and weights for long periods. Must regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds using proper lifting techniques, assistance from another employee, or other available resources. Ability to take stairs, work around constantly moving machinery, and be exposed to weather elements.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly working on the production floor and must use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Exposure to noise, dust, heat, and cold is common. The work environment also involves exposure to machine and tool hazards requiring strict adherence to safety rules and standards.
