Job Title: Chaplain
Departments: Men's Rescue
Location: UGM Spokane Men's Rescue
Reports To: Men's Shelter Director
UGM considers every position one of ministry and a vital and valued part of our team. Therefore, it is essential that all employees of UGM have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and subscribe to our Statement of Faith and Core Values. Additionally, employees must be willing to lead and/or participate in Bible study, prayer, devotions and sharing the Gospel.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Function as the Chaplain overseeing the Biblical teaching and discipleship of the UGM Men's Shelter; Provide spiritual guidance and leadership to the clients and staff of the UGM Men's Shelter.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key Result Area #1: Chapel Services
  • Maintain schedule for chapel services.
  • Organize setup, coordination, and supervision for each chapel provider group.
  • Be present in Chapel service a minimum of 3 nights per week; flexibility to observe and meet with other groups as needed.
  • Organize audio visual support for UGM Events happening in the UGM Chapel, including but not limited to Grace Blitz, Life Languages Seminars, All Staff meetings and UGM Connect.
  • Maintain chapel audio-visual equipment in good operating condition.
  • Train RA staff, Recovery program and select ERP men to operate the media equipment in the chapel.
  • Train Recovery program men to fulfil chapel duties; accountability provided.
  • Inform Shelter Guests of necessary information through announcements in the chapel services.
  • Evaluate chapel provider groups and churches annually or as needed. Share evaluations with those groups and churches, providing feedback to ensure quality and biblically sound chapel services.
  • Maintain statistics on the number of men who made salvation decisions, attended bible studies and individual pastoral counseling.
  • Ensure testimonies are being used effectively to help encourage current residents.
  • Train, empower, and oversee chaplain volunteers and chapel providers.
  • Communicate with providers and volunteers to get feedback on services and to facilitate follow up with men.
  • Maintain a manual of setup procedures and needs for chapel providers.

Key Result Area #2: Spiritual Care
  • Be available for 1 on 1 discipleship with Guest, ERP and RV men.
  • Be available to men needing prayer and pastoral care.
  • Regularly meet with Guest Case Management team for the purpose of understanding the spiritual needs of men they case manage.
  • Follow up with case managers on Pastoral Care referrals.
  • Train, empower, and oversee volunteers for counseling, pastoral care, and Bible Studies.
  • Teach ERP/RV Bible Study weekly.
  • Maintain current inventory of material for discipleship.
  • Practice good and timely communication with all assigned volunteers and staff.
  • Continue to develop Bible study and discipleship material for clients with the focus of discipleship.
  • Remain available to Men's Shelter staff in need of prayer and pastoral care.

Key Result Area #3: Other
  • Personally introduce yourself to every new client who enters the shelter to offer spiritual care services.
  • Assist in handling clients in crisis; respond to requests for assistance.
  • Attend weekly Men's Shelter staff meeting.
  • Fulfill additional assignments and teamwork as assigned.
  • Fulfill 2 months of on call RA duties per year.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Committed Christian, able and willing to model servant-leadership and interested in being part of a ministry for the poor, homeless, drug addicted and mentally ill. Grounded in the Christian faith as a mature, active member of the body of Christ, in accordance with Union Gospel Mission Statement of Purpose, Statement of Vision and Statement of Faith.
  • Strong interpersonal skills - exercise compassion and discernment while modeling the teachings of Jesus Christ.
  • Able and willing, as a unified team member, to honor the leadership, chain of command, and standards and ministry objectives of Union Gospel Mission.
  • Computer literate (Word, Excel, Outlook); able to complete documents, reports and accurate records. Willing to continue education as needed or required.
  • Excellent communication skills including written, verbal and instructional.
  • Must have a teachable spirit and the ability to manage multiple emotional and task-related variables, listen, and make sound decisions in alignment with UGM's purpose.
  • Minimum ten (10) years of sobriety, if in recovery.
  • Insightful, trustworthy, honest, reliable, modeling appropriate boundaries and strong work ethic.
  • Valid Washington or Idaho driver's license- required.
  • CPR/First Aid certification - required.
  • Yearly TB clearance - required.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL FACTORS:
Occasionally = 1%-33%; Frequently = 34%-66%; Continuously = 67%-100%
  • Work is primarily indoors and may require climbing three flights of stairs, sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and going from building to building - continuously.
  • Requires working with a diverse population, many of whom struggle with homelessness, addiction and mental illness - continuously.
  • Requires a sustained level of high energy, stamina, and the ability to move about all of the facilities on a regular and ongoing basis - frequently.
  • Requires the ability to hear, see, and speak clearly - continuously.

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS USED:
  • Computer skills, Word, Excel, Outlook, Office 365, UKG HR, Waypoint, Internet.
  • Copier/Printer, Phone, Fax, Breathalyzer, and Drug Testing Kit.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Five (5) or more years' prior related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIREMENTS:
Union Gospel Mission is a privately funded 501(c)3 non-profit, evangelical Christian ministry. Our designated purpose is religious, and we are a Christ-centered ministry which is dedicated to sharing the Gospel and helping the homeless and impoverished. We consider every position to be essential in the fulfillment of our ministry and Statement of Purpose. As such, each employee must have a relationship with Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord. All employees must:
  • Be able and willing to share the Gospel and participate in all of the ministry activities of Union Gospel Mission.

EXPECTATIONS LIST:
General
  • Demonstrate consistent application of the Union Gospel Mission's Core Values in daily interactions and decision-making.

Daily:
  • Review Shift Log Report from previous day and follow up on any concerns regarding Aftercare clients.
  • Meet with all newly checked-in guests to complete Basic Intake and Spiritual Assessment.
  • Check and respond to email and telephone communication.

Weekly:
  • Participate in the Men's Shelter Staff Meeting
  • Participate in the Work therapy meeting.
  • All notes are entered into clients Waypoint. Waypoint Data Entry Expectations are followed.

Quarterly:
  • Fulfill 2 on call months a year for the Men's Shelter.

Chapel
Daily:
  • Communicate with volunteers and chapel providers ensuring all needs are met and listening to praises and concerns.
  • Monitor chapel services a minimum of 3 nights a week and follow up on any concerns identified.

Weekly:
  • Ensure chapel equipment is maintained in good working condition and organized.
  • Review chapel reports and follow up on needs/concerns.

Monthly:
  • Train ERP/RV/LRP men on chapel equipment and duties.
  • Establish a chapel duty schedule for ERP/RV/LRP men at the beginning of each phase.
  • Organize 2nd Wednesday Chapel Service.
  • Maintain chapel schedule, communicate all changes to providers and pass extra providers onto the Crisis Shelter.
  • Evaluate chapel providers a minimum of once per phase, ensuring they are adhering to UGM Chapel Provider expectations.
  • Train volunteers in chapel responsibilities and ensure they have all supplies and needs met.

Spiritual Care
Daily:
  • Be available to provide prayer and pastoral care for men in need.

Weekly:
  • 1-on-1 discipleship with guests, ERP, and RV men.
  • Assist in crisis management of guests and staff.
  • Participate in the weekly Case Management meeting.
  • Teach ERP/RV Discipleship/Bible study class.
  • Participate in the ERP/RV community meeting.
  • Follow-up with Day Room & Devotions volunteers, ensuring they have needed supplies and address any concerns.

Quarterly:
  • Train volunteers in Day room and Devotions responsibilities.
