Job description
The Senior Director, Corporate Reporting & Accounting is one of the primary supporting roles to the VP, Controller, providing day-to-day leadership to maintain a disciplined, timely, and accurate close and reporting cadence across all legal entities. The role is accountable for the integrity of Canfor's financial books and records and for the consistent application of accounting policies, controls, and governance that underpin reliable internal and external reporting.
With oversight of Corporate Accounting, as well as Financial Reporting & Consolidations, and Technical Accounting/IFRS, the Senior Director, Corporate Reporting & Accounting partners with Finance leaders and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver high-quality financial statements, management reporting, and consolidation outputs. The position provides clear direction to Directors, Managers, and shared service partners, enabling standardized processes, strong controllership practices, and consistent decision-making on critical accounting judgments.
The Senior Director drives audit readiness and continuous improvement at a global scale by strengthening the close, improving balance sheet substantiation, and advancing automation and standardization across controllership processes. This role champions accountability and operational excellence by proactively identifying risks, remediating control gaps, and improving cycle times to support organizational growth, compliance obligations, and strategic objectives.
A day in the life of the Sr. Director, Corporate Reporting & Accounting includes:
- Set the global controllership agenda by establishing the strategy, governance framework, and performance expectations for close, consolidation, external reporting, and technical accounting across Canfor.
- Own enterprise-wide financial close governance, including approval of the close and control standards; monitor execution through Directors and ensure a disciplined, predictable, and accelerated close cycle.
- Provide executive oversight of external reporting and disclosures, ensuring financial statements, MD&A, debt reporting, and regulatory filings meet the highest standards of accuracy, consistency, and compliance; delegate preparation and coordination to the Director, Corporate Reporting.
- Oversee group consolidations and reporting integrity, ensuring appropriate judgments, consistency in application of accounting policies, and a robust control environment across all legal entities and jurisdictions.
- Lead technical accounting governance, setting policy direction, approving complex accounting positions, and ensuring consistent interpretation and application of IFRS across the organization.
- Serve as a key finance liaison to the CFO, VP Controller, Audit Committee, and external auditors on controllership matters; provide oversight of audit strategy, key risk areas, and resolution of significant accounting and reporting issues.
- Establish and monitor key performance metrics across controllership (close cycle, reconciliation quality, audit outcomes, reporting timeliness), holding Directors accountable for delivery and continuous improvement.
- Champion transformation of controllership processes, including automation (e.g., reconciliations, journals), standardization of reporting, and optimization of systems, data governance, and chart of accounts.
- Oversee the design and effectiveness of internal controls and financial governance frameworks, partnering with Internal Audit and Risk functions to proactively identify and remediate control gaps.
- Provide strategic oversight of regulatory compliance and disclosure governance, ensuring appropriate processes, controls, and executive certifications are in place for all public company obligations.
- Lead organizational capability and talent strategy within controllership, including coaching and developing Directors and Managers (e.g., Corporate Accounting, Corporate Reporting, Technical Accounting, Consolidations), succession planning, and strengthening leadership bench strength.
- Sponsor and oversee finance integrations and enterprise initiatives (e.g., acquisitions, system implementations, legal entity restructuring), ensuring alignment of accounting policies, reporting structures, and controls.
- Drive a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement, reinforcing strong controllership principles and enabling high-quality decision support for executive leadership and the Board.
For this role, you'll come equipped with:
- CPA-CA (or equivalent recognized designation) required.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; an advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) is an asset.
- Deep expertise in IFRS and external reporting requirements for public companies, including MD&A, financial statements, and regulatory filings.
- 12-15+ years of progressive accounting and controllership leadership experience, including senior roles overseeing multi-entity, global finance organizations.
- Demonstrated success leading large, geographically dispersed teams through Directors and senior managers.
- Proven ability to operate effectively at the executive level, supporting CFO, VP, Audit Committee, and Board interactions.
- Strong track record of building, developing, and retaining high-performing leadership teams within a complex finance function.
- Extensive experience overseeing global consolidations, intercompany structures, and foreign currency translation in multi-jurisdictional environments.
- Strong technical accounting foundation with the ability to assess, challenge, and approve complex accounting positions.
- Experience with impairment testing, pension accounting, and deferred tax considerations in a large enterprise environment.
- Thorough understanding of financial close processes and operating models.
- Advanced proficiency with ERP systems and consolidation/reporting tools.
- Experience supporting or leading M&A transactions, including due diligence, purchase price accounting, and post-acquisition integration.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing or asset-intensive industries (multi-site, global operations preferred).
- Ability to connect financial results to operational and strategic business drivers.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders across Finance, Operations, IT, Tax, and Treasury.
- Exceptional executive communication and presentation skills, with the ability to distill complex issues for senior leadership and Board audiences.
- Strong judgment and decision-making capability in high-stakes accounting and disclosure matters.
