Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician performs all of the laboratory tests in one or more departments of the clinical laboratory. Demonstrates the ability to perform with minimal supervision. Maintains records of procedures, quality control, and performance of equipment. Communicates results and related information to physicians and other health professionals. Has appropriate technical background to review results critically.
Essential Functions
Performs routine and complex procedures in hematology exercising independent judgement, and clinical chemistry procedures.
Performs simple and complex procedures in clinical microbiology, parasitology routine urinalysis.
Performs clinical procedures in spinal fluid analysis, examination of body fluids, and semen analysis.
Prepares reagents, media, and solutions necessary in the performance of specific laboratory procedures.
Participates in external and internal quality control programs.
Performs phlebotomy on patients, and prepares written reports of tests performed.
Performs tasks necessary to the maintenance of a hygienic and safe work environment.
May supervise a laboratory section during the absence of the regular supervisor.
Participates in the laboratory call-back system.
Assists in training other technologists and technicians in laboratory procedures as required.
Accepts assignments in other areas of the laboratory whenever necessary and performs whatever duties are essential to the continued functioning of the laboratory.
Other Functions
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related scientific discipline with a minimum of one year experience in a clinical laboratory OR; Associate's degree in a laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution with 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory.
Medical Technologist (MT) (ASCP) or equivalent OR; Medical Lab Technician (MLT) (ASCP) or equivalent.
Demonstrated ability in carefully organized and methodical laboratory practice.
Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with other members of the laboratory staff.
Must have adequate vision (corrected) to detect and report details in microscopy and test procedures, and must be able to distinguish colors and hues.
Sufficient manual coordination and skill to perform delicate laboratory procedures.
Ability to communicate information accurately and effectively to the medical staff and other members of the medical profession.
Understanding of the need for strict confidentiality of all information related to patient care and the ability to observe practices assuring this confidentiality.
Additional Details
Continuing education and training necessary to stay abreast of new developments in diagnostic medicine.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a laboratory or healthcare setting and may involve exposure to chemicals or infectious diseases. Requires standing for extended periods of time and/or use of protective gear.
Work Schedule and Work Arrangement
Hours fluctuate based on department need between 7:00am - 9:00pm, to include weekends and holidays.
Salary Information
Hourly Rate: $32 - $37
UMass Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range between $32.00/hr and $37.00/hr for this position.
