What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam programmer?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges Mastercam programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

Do Mastercam programmers make good money?

Mastercam programmers typically earn competitive wages, with salaries varying based on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers who are proficient in CAD/CAM software and have experience with complex machining often command higher pay. Certification and specialization can also positively impact earning potential.

The Engineering Manager leads the complete new product development lifecycle from project award through production readiness and manufacturing handoff. This role oversees Engineering, Project Management, and Tool Room operations while ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with quality and customer requirements. The position combines hands-on technical leadership with people management, supporting injection molding, metal injection molding (MIM), CNC machining, tooling, automation, and manufacturing process development.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
  • Lead new product development projects from project kickoff through engineering, tooling, validation, and production launch.

  • Manage Engineering, Project Management, and Tool Room teams while driving performance, accountability, and resource planning.

  • Oversee tooling development, process validation, manufacturability, automation, and technical problem-solving.

  • Partner with Sales and Business Development on technical reviews, quoting, manufacturability assessments, and customer support.

  • Ensure compliance with ISO 9001, ITAR requirements, project budgets, schedules, and successful manufacturing handoffs.

Key Skills
  • Injection Molding, Metal Injection Molding (MIM), and CNC Manufacturing (3, 4, and 5-axis)

  • Engineering Leadership, Project Management, and Tool Room Oversight

  • CAD, GD&T, DFM, FMEA, Process Validation, and Manufacturing Optimization

  • Mold/Tool Design and Mastercam Programming

Non-Negotiable Requirements

Candidates must demonstrate direct, hands-on experience in at least one of the following, backed by specific, verifiable project examples (not just familiarity or oversight-level exposure):

  • Hands-on plastics processing expertise: able to run scientific molding directly at the machine, including setting and troubleshooting process parameters.

  • Full tool/mold design experience: capable of designing injection molding tooling start to finish.

  • Or, Mastercam expertise at a demonstrated, expert level, combined with engineering and management experience to support it.

  • CNC machining experience across 3, 4, and 5-axis work is required in addition to the above.

Education & Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in injection molding, MIM, CNC machining, or related manufacturing engineering.

  • Experience leading engineering teams, project managers, and tooling operations.

  • Strong knowledge of CAD, GD&T, DFM, FMEA, validation processes, and ERP systems.

  • Experience working within ISO 9001 and ITAR-regulated manufacturing environments.

  • U.S. citizenship required for ITAR compliance.

  • Master's degree, PMP certification, or experience in medical device, aerospace, defense, robotics, or automation is preferred.

Benefits
  • Health insurance

  • Paid time off (PTO)

  • 401(k)
