Mastercam Programming information

What are some common challenges Mastercam Programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam Programmer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

EARNING POTENTIAL: Up to $45.00 per hour baseline starting rate (scaling with programming depth) + corporate profit sharing + premium corporate benefits package.

LOCATION: Greater Duluth, MN area (100% onsite advanced production and engineering facility).

COMPLIANCE: United States Citizens or Green Card holders only; must reside within a dependable daily commuting radius of the facility.

This is an opportunity to join a globally recognized, privately held industrial equipment manufacturer specializing in high-performance heavy machinery and advanced work tools. Built on a fierce commitment to innovation, safety, and a zero-layoff history, this organization completely rejects rigid corporate politics, creating an environment where employee longevity and professional craftsmanship are the standard.

This senior-track position is designed for an expert CAM professional who thrives on solving complex machining puzzles and wants to escape the monotony of high-volume production. Taking the helm of custom programming operations, you will develop programming architecture for high-complexity, low-volume industrial components engineered from high-strength alloys. Operating as a foundational technical partner, you will work closely with design engineering and shop floor teams to troubleshoot tool paths, design custom workholding, and optimize manufacturing methods. The organization protects your work-life balance with exceptional shift flexibility and directly shares in its macroeconomic success through a robust profit-sharing program. It is the ideal setup for a sharp analytical programmer seeking unmatched stability, technical freedom, and a secure career home.

What You Will Be Doing
  • CAM Architecture Development: Developing, testing, and optimizing complex multi-axis CNC programs from scratch using Mastercam, establishing the ideal manufacturing methods and tooling strategies for advanced industrial builds.
  • Data Analysis & Sequencing: Analyzing engineering job orders, structural blueprints, and 3D CAD data models to determine the optimal sequence of operations and custom tool selections.
  • Database Management: Maintaining and auditing the central corporate CNC program and routing database, ensuring all product files are accurately stored by machine process and type.
  • Shop Floor Technical Support: Providing real-time technical support to production floor teams, identifying and resolving machining roadblocks related to setups, tooling dynamics, and code logic.
  • Custom Fixture Design: Participating in the engineering and design of custom jigs, workholding, and specialized fixtures to maximize manufacturing throughput and ensure 100% part compliance.
  • Process Optimization: Leading localized Lean manufacturing initiatives and conducting time studies to evaluate actual output against production and setup engineering standards.
  • Cross-Functional Engineering: Collaborating directly with design engineering teams to review prototypes and ensure manufacturing processes are fully optimized for maximum efficiency and quality.
What We Are Looking For
  • Mastercam Precision: Verifiable, advanced programming experience in a heavy CNC manufacturing environment, with a proven ability to independently write computer code from scratch within Mastercam.
  • Advanced GD&T Literacy: Expert-level mastery of industrial blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and the practical application of precision measurement metrics.
  • Process Development & Kinematics: A strong background in tooling application and operational sequencing; direct exposure to 5-axis machining environments or Visual Basic coding is a significant advantage.
  • Analytical Logic: Sharp critical-thinking skills to troubleshoot complex machine tool paths on the fly and mentor junior machining personnel on code interpretation.
  • Employment Reliability: A rock-solid, dependable work history that demonstrates organizational commitment and multi-year tenures at previous employers; frequent job-hopping will not be evaluated.
