Mastercam Programming information

What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam programmer?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges Mastercam programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

Do Mastercam programmers make good money?

Mastercam programmers typically earn competitive wages, with salaries varying based on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers who are proficient in CAD/CAM software and have experience with complex machining often command higher pay. Certification and specialization can also positively impact earning potential.

  • COMPENSATION: Up to $45.00/Hour Baseline Starting Rate (scaling with programming depth) + Corporate Profit Sharing + Comprehensive Benefits Package (Optional 2nd Shift +$1.00/hr or 3rd Shift +$2.00/hr differentials available if preferred)
  • WORK SCHEDULE: Premium 1st Shift | Flexible daytime start windows (6:00 AM, 7:00 AM, or 8:00 AM)
  • EXPERIENCE: 4+ years of elite Mastercam programming experience with a proven track record of developing complex multi-axis programs entirely from scratch
  • TECHNICAL SKILLS: Mastercam fluency, 3D CAD data model analysis, expert GD&T blueprint literacy, custom fixture/workholding design, and precision tooling selection
  • EDUCATION: Engineering Degree or Machine Tool / CNC Manufacturing Technology Diploma preferred; equivalent elite field experience fully considered
  • ROLE HIGHLIGHTS: High-complexity, low-volume industrial builds made from high-strength alloys; zero-layoff history and robust profit sharing
  • REQUIREMENTS: US Citizen or Green Card holder residing within a dependable daily commuting radius of the Duluth, MN facility

If you are an expert CAM professional who thrives on solving complex machining puzzles and wants to escape the monotony of high-volume production, this senior-track programming seat is built for you. The employer is a globally recognized, privately held industrial equipment manufacturer specializing in high-performance heavy machinery and advanced work tools. Built on a fierce commitment to innovation, safety, and a zero-layoff history, this organization rejects corporate bureaucracy in favor of craftsman-level quality.

Taking the helm of custom programming operations, you will develop multi-axis CAM architecture for low-volume, high-value industrial components. Operating as a foundational technical lead, you will collaborate closely with design engineering and shop floor teams to troubleshoot tool paths, design custom workholding, and refine manufacturing methods. The company protects your work-life balance with exceptional shift flexibility and directly shares its success through a robust profit-sharing program.

What You Will Be Doing (Daily Responsibilities)
  • Develop CAM Architecture: Write, test, and optimize complex multi-axis CNC programs from scratch using Mastercam, determining ideal operational sequences and tooling strategies.
  • Analyze CAD Models & Blueprints: Interpret 3D CAD data files, job orders, and GD&T engineering prints to map out precision machining passes for high-strength alloys.
  • Maintain Central Program Database: Audit and manage the central CNC program repository, ensuring program routing files are systematically updated by machine type and process.
  • Provide Shop Floor Technical Support: Partner with machinists and setup leads on the floor to troubleshoot active tool paths, setup dynamics, and code logic in real time.
  • Design Custom Workholding: Participate in the design and engineering of custom jigs, fixtures, and workholding systems to maximize accuracy and throughput.
  • Drive Process Optimization: Lead localized Lean manufacturing initiatives and time studies to evaluate active cycle times against engineering standards.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work directly with design engineers during prototype reviews to ensure new parts are optimized for efficient production.
What We Are Looking For (Requirements & Qualifications)
  • 4+ years of advanced Mastercam programming experience in a heavy CNC manufacturing environment, independently writing multi-axis code from scratch.
  • Advanced GD&T Mastery: Deep fluency in reading complex industrial blueprints, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and precision metrology standards.
  • Process & Tooling Depth: Strong background in tooling selection, cutting physics, operational sequencing, and workholding design (5-axis machining or Visual Basic experience is a strong plus).
  • Analytical Problem-Solving: Sharp technical mind capable of evaluating tool wear, optimizing tool paths on the fly, and mentoring shop floor personnel on code logic.
  • Employment Reliability: A rock-solid work history demonstrating multi-year tenure and career commitment with prior employers.
  • Local Proximity: Residing within a comfortable daily driving radius of the Greater Duluth, MN area.
