Mastercam Programming information

What are some common challenges Mastercam Programmers face when working with complex parts, and how can they address them?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when programming complex geometries, such as intricate contours or multi-axis toolpaths. These situations require careful planning to avoid collisions, ensure optimal surface finishes, and maintain efficient cycle times. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers can help identify potential manufacturing issues early on. Additionally, regularly updating Mastercam skills and staying current with software updates can greatly improve problem-solving and productivity when handling difficult projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mastercam Programmer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mastercam Programmer, you need strong skills in CNC machining, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, typically supported by technical training or certification in Mastercam. Familiarity with Mastercam software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is crucial for producing accurate toolpaths and efficient machining. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with machinists and engineers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure the creation of precise parts, minimize errors, and optimize production efficiency in a manufacturing environment.

What is Mastercam programming?

Mastercam programming refers to the process of using Mastercam software to create toolpaths and generate G-code for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. This software enables programmers to design parts, simulate machining operations, and optimize cutting processes for manufacturing. Mastercam programmers convert CAD models into instructions that CNC machines use to fabricate parts with precision and efficiency.

Job description

Millennium Power Service is hiring an experienced CNC Machinist with strong 4-axis milling and Mastercam programming experience to support precision manufacturing operations at our Westfield, MA facility.

This position is ideal for a machinist who enjoys owning the entire process — from reviewing prints and programming to setup, prove-out, and producing high-quality finished parts. We’re looking for someone who can work independently, solve problems on the fly, and consistently deliver precision work in a fast-paced shop environment.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Program, set up, and operate 4-axis Haas CNC milling machines
  • Build and modify programs using Mastercam software
  • Perform complete machine setups including tooling, fixturing, offsets, and first-piece inspections
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T requirements
  • Machine precision components while maintaining close tolerances and quality standards
  • Edit programs and adjust machining parameters to improve performance and efficiency
  • Select appropriate tooling, inserts, holders, and work holding solutions for each project
  • Inspect parts using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, indicators, and bore gauges
  • Troubleshoot machining and programming issues to reduce downtime and improve production flow
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-focused work area

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of CNC machining experience preferred
  • Hands-on experience with 4-axis Haas milling machines
  • Strong Mastercam programming skills required
  • Ability to independently complete setups and prove-outs
  • Comfortable machining to tight tolerances
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T
  • Strong understanding of feeds, speeds, tooling, and machining strategies
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment
  • Solid math and problem-solving abilities
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Trade school or machining certification is a plus

Preferred Background

  • Experience machining stainless steel, alloy steel, or specialty materials
  • Familiarity with Haas controls and post-processors
  • Continuous improvement mindset with the ability to optimize cycle times and reduce scrap

Schedule

  • Monday – Friday | 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Overtime and weekend hours available based on production needs

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive pay based on experience and skill level
  • Premium overtime and weekend pay opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Short-term and long-term disability plans
  • Life insurance and 401(k)
  • Paid holidays and PTO
  • Stable work environment with long-term career potential
  • Clean, organized, and safety-driven shop

At Millennium Power Services, we value craftsmanship, accountability, and teamwork. If you’re a skilled machinist looking for a company where your experience and problem-solving abilities make an impact, we encourage you to apply.
