What is a Mastercam programmer?

A Mastercam programmer sets up, programs, and adjusts CNC manufacturing machinery and CAM computer software. Your responsibilities include designing tools and fixtures for improved machining, understanding speeds/feeds of tools and their effect on manufacturing cycle time, and providing support to each machinist. You actively search for process improvement opportunities, while keeping production standards and safety as top priorities. Other duties include staying updated on industry trends and incorporating developing technologies to improve manufacturing processes. Some employers require you to run studies on cost reduction and provide recommendations. You work with engineers, supervisors, and other shop personnel to resolve machining and quality issues.

What are some common challenges Mastercam programmers face when transitioning from 2D to 3D machining projects?

Mastercam Programmers often encounter challenges when moving from 2D to 3D machining, such as adapting to more complex toolpath strategies, understanding advanced surface modeling, and ensuring accurate simulation to avoid costly errors. Learning how to efficiently use Mastercam's 3D features and integrating them with multi-axis machines requires additional training and practice. Collaborating closely with engineers and machinists is also essential, as projects often demand precise communication to interpret complex drawings and meet tight tolerances.

What is a Mastercam programmer?

A Mastercam Programmer is a skilled professional who uses Mastercam software to create toolpaths and instructions for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. They translate technical drawings and blueprints into precise machine code, enabling the automated manufacturing of parts and components. Mastercam Programmers play a crucial role in ensuring efficient, accurate, and safe machining processes in industries like aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing. Their expertise helps optimize production times, reduce waste, and improve product quality.

Summary/Objective
We’re hiring a CNC Mill Machinist/Programmer with strong Mastercam skills! In this dual-role position, you’ll be responsible for programming and machining precision components that support our high-quality machining services. You’ll take projects from blueprint to finished part—programming toolpaths in Mastercam, setting up CNC mills, and producing components that meet demanding specifications. Our clean, air-conditioned facility is equipped with modern machinery and software to support your success. At FERPA, we value craftsmanship, innovation, and professional development—and we’re looking for someone who does too.
*** Unique opportunity: You will lead and scale our high-growth milling department—owning day-to-day scheduling, standards, and continuous improvement while staying hands-on at the machine and in Mastercam. We’re in the process of moving into a new facility and plan to invest in additional CNC mills to meet growing demand!
Responsibilities
  • Create efficient and accurate CNC milling programs using Mastercam based on blueprints, CAD models, and job specifications.
  • Set up and operate CNC milling machines, ensuring precise material loading and accurate configuration for optimal machining performance.
  • Configure tool registers, apply offsets/compensations, and utilize conditional switches as required by job specifications.
  • Interpret and apply information from blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics to guide machining operations.
  • Perform detailed inspections using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring instruments to verify part conformity.
  • Confirm machine settings and verify compliance with established quality standards.
  • Design and build custom fixtures to support efficient and precise CNC milling operations.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, machine settings, and workholding fixtures tailored to specific production requirements.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and ensure machines are properly calibrated and in safe working condition.
  • Monitor active operations, observe drilling, grooving, and cutting, and make real-time adjustments to ensure efficiency and quality.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical or process issues related to the CNC milling machines.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety procedures and guidelines when operating equipment and handling materials.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve production deadlines and quality objectives.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area in accordance with 5S or lean manufacturing principles.
  • Support additional tasks and job-related duties as assigned to meet business and production needs.
Job Requirements/ Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Technical or vocational training in machining or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience operating milling machines.
