Job Details

Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) is seeking a highly qualified educator with broad training and demonstrated experience or enthusiasm for teaching in a medical school curriculum. This position is a tenure track, 12-month appointment on the Macon, Georgia campus. Additional duties will be required/assigned during the summer. The departmental assignment will be based on degree type and experience.

Responsibilities

The Mercer University School of Medicine has three four‑year medical school campuses located in Macon, Savanna, and Columbus, Georgia. The candidate will be based primarily in Macon, but all bioethics and professionalism faculty are expected to teach on all three campuses both virtually and physically. The selected candidate will work closely with the Chair of the Department of Bioethics and Medical Humanities (Brian H. Childs, PhD—email: childs_bh@mercer.edu) and other faculty in creating an integrated ethics and humanities curriculum in both the pre‑clinical and clerkship years. Faculty are engaged in a variety of pedagogical modes including Team Based Learning and Problem Based Learning. In addition, the selected candidate will be involved in special programs such as faculty development in ethics education, teaching and grand rounds in our affiliated medical centers, sponsoring student projects and research in bioethics and the medical humanities, as well as faculty committee participation. The department also sponsors a four‑year certificate program in bioethics and medical humanities which is open to select students beginning in the second semester of the first pre‑clinical year.

Faculty members are expected to participate broadly across the curricula in both the medical and graduate programs, engage in scholarship in areas of Bioethics and Medical Humanities, which includes responsibilities for the four‑year certificate program in bioethics and medical humanities, as well as interdisciplinary work with the law school, nursing school, pharmacy school and the school of theology.

Qualifications
  • Hold a terminal degree (PhD, JD, DBe, MD, DO or equivalent) from an accredited college/university in an appropriate discipline.
  • Demonstrated training in ethics consultation.
  • A commitment to the mission of Mercer University School of Medicine.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Associate Professor or associate professor‑eligible.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the care of the rural and underserved.
  • A record of scholarship and teaching in undergraduate medical education.
  • Certification as a clinical ethics consultant (HEC‑C).
Ideal Candidate
  • Experience independently developing learning resources, independently developing and facilitating large group interactive learning sessions, and developing items for assessment of student learning.
  • Experience as a tutor/facilitator of small group interdisciplinary case‑based learning sessions in a clinically oriented medical curriculum.

The Doctor of Medicine curriculum has been organized and designed to support the mission of the school to train physicians to meet the healthcare needs of rural and other underserved areas of Georgia. The curriculum is patient‑centered, providing early application of medical and clinical knowledge in a variety of classroom and clinical venues. The program fosters the development of independent, life‑long learning. In addition to the Doctor of Medicine program, the medical school also offers the following degrees: a PhD in Biomedical Sciences; a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences; a Doctor of Philosophy in Rural Healthcare Sciences; and a Master’s in Family Therapy.
