Job Description
MUSC is a nationally-recognized academic health sciences center committed to excellence in teaching, research, and patient-care innovation. The MSHQS program prepares graduates for careers in healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance, and other quality and safety-focused leadership roles in the healthcare industry.
The program is offered in an online format and emphasizes healthcare quality improvement methodologies, patient safety principles, data-driven quality measurement, regulatory compliance, and systems-based approaches to healthcare safety. The curriculum is designed to develop competent professionals who can lead quality and safety initiatives across diverse healthcare settings.
Small class sizes, strong faculty mentorship, and a flexible online format make this program well-suited to working professionals and students seeking to advance in healthcare quality and safety leadership roles. The adjunct faculty for the MSHQS program will join a dynamic team that bridges academic rigor and real-world healthcare quality and safety practice, supporting learners as they move into roles that drive organizational excellence and patient safety improvement in healthcare.
Primary Responsibilities:
Serve as an instructor for one or more MSHQS courses per academic year (typically 2-3 courses per year for adjunct status)
Deliver high-quality online instruction, including lectures (asynchronous), discussion facilitation, assignment design, assessment, and feedback
Maintain virtual office hours and respond to student inquiries in a timely manner
Monitor student engagement and performance; intervene or refer to program support as needed
Collaborate with the division director and other faculty to ensure course content is current, evidence-based, and aligned with student learning outcomes and competency-based education strategies
Participate in faculty orientation/training for online pedagogy and virtual instruction; abide by university policies on academic integrity, accessibility, and teaching best practices
Engage in periodic program reviews and mentor students in assigned courses
Adjunct faculty may also serve as mentors or advisors for applied projects, supporting students through healthcare quality improvement projects, patient safety analysis, and professional development processes
Minimum Qualifications:
Faculty teaching graduate and post-baccalaureate coursework must have earned a doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline. Therefore, the minimum qualifications for this adjunct appointment are:
Doctoral degree in Healthcare Administration/Management, Business Administration/Management (with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Healthcare Administration/Management), Health Services Management, Healthcare Quality and Safety, Public Health, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
Evidence of successful teaching experience in a Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Quality and Safety, or related program in higher education.
At least 18 graduate semester hours in healthcare administration, healthcare quality, or related discipline; and
Professional experience in healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, or related roles, and/or evidence of continuing professional development (certifications, publications, presentations, etc.) in the field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral degree (Ph.D., DHA, or related) in Healthcare Quality and Safety, Healthcare Administration, or related field
Experience teaching in online graduate programs (preferably in accelerated programs)
Demonstrated ability to use learning-management systems (e.g., Brightspace, Canvas, Blackboard), virtual classroom technologies, and engage adult learners
Active participation in professional organizations such as AUPHA, ACHE, NAHQ, IHI, MGMA, or other relevant healthcare quality and safety associations
Professional certifications such as CPHQ, CPPS, FACHE, Six Sigma (Green Belt, Black Belt), Lean certification, or equivalent
Experience in healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance (CMS, Joint Commission, etc.), performance improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA), root cause analysis, or quality measurement and reporting
Record of peer-reviewed publications or presentations in healthcare quality, patient safety, health services research, or related fields
Ability to contribute to curriculum design, continuous improvement, and student mentorship
Experience with competency-based education strategies and assessment methods
Knowledge of quality improvement frameworks and methodologies (e.g., IHI Model for Improvement, Plan-Do-Study-Act, Lean, Six Sigma, High Reliability Organization principles)
Familiarity with healthcare quality and safety data analytics tools and quality measurement systems
Understanding of regulatory standards and requirements (CMS Quality Programs, Joint Commission standards, NCQA, URAC, value-based care models)
