Job Summary

Fire Marshals' duties include but are not limited to fire code enforcement or investigating fires for origin and cause. Fire Marshals may be sworn law-enforcement officers and are often experienced firefighters. The Fire Marshal is responsible for enforcing laws concerning flammable materials.

The Fire Marshal has responsibilities to make sure the working environment is safe in case of a fire. They must check that fire doors and fire exits are closed, clear, unlocked and ready for use. All escape routes are safe, unblocked and clear. May perform other duties as required.

Scope of Responsibility

  • This job will have periodic access to confidential data including company plans, designs, and programs.


Supervisory Responsibility

  • This job has no supervisory responsibility.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of fire prevention principles, codes, and regulations, including inspections, fire hazards, and methods of eliminating hazardous conditions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fire investigation principles and practices, including determining the cause and origin of fires, and potentially suspected arson.
  • Knowledge of various fire safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, alarms, and sprinkler systems, and their proper installation and maintenance.
  • Understanding of building construction components, fire-resistant materials, and fire protection systems.
  • Knowledge of flammable liquids, gases, and hazardous chemicals, their proper storage, and handling.
  • Understanding of electrical wiring systems and their capacities.
  • Knowledge of modern practices of fire investigation, including the prosecution of incendiary fires.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances and fire safety standards.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of employee supervision.
  • Sworn law-enforcement officers and/or experienced firefighter

Physical Demands

  • Must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
  • While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand and walk.

Work Environment

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, may be high depending upon the event.

Travel Required
