Job description

About Base
Base is America's next-generation power company. We're rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization-electricity-by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that is transforming today's fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. We are engineers, operators, and creatives solving some of the most complex, interdisciplinary challenges of our time.
About the Role
As a Market Operations Engineer at Base Power, you'll play a critical role at the intersection of energy wholesale markets and real-time operations. You will help optimize the performance of Base's fleet of distributed, behind-the-meter batteries across ERCOT and other markets. Your work will span ISO stakeholder engagement, technical and business analysis, and hands-on support of our real-time operations team to drive asset value.
What You'll Do
  • Monitor and interpret ISO protocols, regulatory updates, and market rule changes through active participation in ISO stakeholder processes.
  • Conduct asset deployment valuation and technical analysis to inform business development and strategic initiatives.
  • Develop white papers and recommendations to support market development efforts.
  • Collaborate with the real-time asset management team to maximize operational revenue from distributed battery fleets.

What You'll Bring
  • Strong first-principles thinker who favors the simplest effective solution.
  • Deep understanding of power systems operations at both the distribution and wholesale levels, with a passion for further developing domain expertise.
  • Proficient in data analysis techniques with advanced programming skills in Python, Pandas, and SQL.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to create clear, compelling data visualizations using tools like Plotly, Matplotlib, or Grafana.
  • Ability to contribute to external communications and technical product engineering initiatives.

Preferred Skills
  • Technical background in power systems or a related field.
  • Experience as an energy manager or in operating grid-scale and behind-the-meter asset portfolios.

About the Team
The Markets team at Base is tasked with ensuring the grid-support performance and profitability of Base's distributed battery fleet. This encompasses device communications with balancing authorities, telemetry analysis, algorithms for fleet aggregation and economic dispatch, through to financial portfolio management in wholesale energy markets. Our team is made up of physicists, economists, computer scientists, and engineers; the best candidates will bring the day-over-day intensity of an operator with the foresight to drive the long term development of simpler, more performant automated control. Success looks like building the airplane as it falls out of the sky.
Please note: Base is a startup, which means priorities shift and evolve quickly. Your role may expand or change based on the needs of the business at any given time, so the responsibilities listed may not be exhaustive.
Our Values
  • First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.
  • Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.
  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.
  • Everyone's an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.
  • Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.
  • Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge. We work hard because we care deeply about the impact we're creating. We work in-person. It's not a 9-to-5. We are all-in.
  • Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.
Do the best work of your life at Base.
