What is a marine paramedic?

Marine paramedics are emergency medical professionals trained to provide pre-hospital care and life-saving interventions in marine or aquatic environments. They respond to medical emergencies that occur on ships, offshore platforms, or near bodies of water, and are skilled in managing injuries, illnesses, and rescue operations specific to maritime settings. Their training often includes advanced life support, water rescue techniques, and knowledge of maritime safety protocols. Marine paramedics play a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of crew members, passengers, and others working at sea.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a marine paramedic?

To thrive as a Marine Paramedic, you need advanced knowledge in emergency medical care, water rescue, and survival techniques, typically supported by paramedic certification and specialized marine safety training. Familiarity with equipment such as defibrillators, rescue boats, and marine communication systems is essential. Strong decision-making, teamwork, and stress management skills help individuals excel in high-pressure, remote environments. These skills are vital for ensuring rapid, effective response to emergencies at sea and safeguarding the lives of crew and passengers.

What unique challenges do marine paramedics face compared to land-based paramedics?

Marine Paramedics often work in environments where access to patients and medical facilities can be limited by weather, sea conditions, or vessel accessibility. They must be prepared to provide emergency care in confined, moving spaces and sometimes for extended periods before evacuation is possible. Collaboration with ship crews and maritime authorities is essential, and adaptability is key to handle diverse emergencies such as trauma, hypothermia, or marine animal injuries. This role requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure in remote or unpredictable situations.

What is the difference between Marine Paramedic vs Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

Company Description

AMPHIBIOUS MEDICS
A Veteran Owned Small Business

Amphibious Medics was founded by Mike Donoghue, a diver and set medic, to serve the marine side of LA media productions. We moved into the construction first aid industry after numerous requests from non-entertainment entities. We are now proud to be part of some of the most important construction projects and high profile productions in the country. In 2011, with a nationwide staffing network in place, the Amphibious Medics emergency response and dive teams were in position to “get dirty” with the nation’s largest obstacle racing events, including Tough Mudder and Spartan Race. The high energy excitement of these extreme events has ignited a passionate following among emergency services personnel across the U.S. who are eager to share in the professional challenge that comes with working as an Amphibious Medic.

Our nationwide network of medics are thoroughly screened by our multi-layered vetting process. To be an Amphibious Medic, membership in the National Registry of EMTs and Paramedics alone is not enough – our crew must demonstrate medical authority and responsibility. Attitude, professionalism, and personal appearance are all considered in the exclusive Amphibious Medics hiring process, assuring our clients that responsive and enthusiastic people, each with a passion to serve, are part of your project.

Amphibious Medics is recognized as a Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise, and is a Certified Minority Business Enterprise.
