How much do marine machinist jobs pay per hour?
What does a marine machinist do?
A Marine Machinist fabricates, installs, maintains, and repairs mechanical systems on ships, submarines, and other marine vessels. They work with a variety of metals and machinery, using tools like lathes, milling machines, and grinders to create or modify parts. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting engine components, pumps, valves, and propulsion systems to ensure safe and efficient vessel operation. Marine Machinists typically work in shipyards, naval facilities, or commercial marine repair companies. Attention to detail and precision machining skills are essential for success in this role.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a marine machinist working in a shipyard?
As a Marine Machinist in a shipyard, your daily tasks often include interpreting engineering drawings, setting up and operating a variety of machine tools, and fabricating or repairing ship components such as shafts, valves, and engines. You may also be tasked with inspections, fitting and aligning parts, and troubleshooting mechanical issues alongside engineers and other tradespeople. The work often involves both shop-based machining and on-board repairs, requiring adaptability and a strong commitment to safety protocols. Collaboration with welders, electricians, and shipfitters is commonplace to ensure vessels are maintained to rigorous standards. This dynamic environment offers a variety of challenges and opportunities to develop specialized marine industry skills.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the marine machinist position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Marine Machinist, you need expertise in precision machining, blueprint reading, and mechanical assembly, often grounded in a technical diploma or apprenticeship in marine or industrial machining. Familiarity with CNC machines, lathes, mills, and marine safety protocols, as well as certifications such as OSHA or maritime safety training, are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure accurate fabrication and repair of marine components, safe work practices, and smooth project completion within complex shipyard environments.
