Duties
Help
You will serve as a MARINE INSPECTOR APPRENTICE and be responsible as the civilian resident Prevention Department's source for continuity of inspection policies, technical issues, special program support activity and a primary inspection representative with the maritime industry responsible for commercial vessel safety.
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

• Conducts reviews of vessel's plans, safety management systems and operating systems to determine compliance with regulations and applicable standards
• Inspects all vessel's systems to ensure that they are in safe operating condition and are in compliance with applicable design, installation, and operational standards
• Annotates deficiencies, corrective measures and prepares appropriate documentation to notify the vessel operator or his/her agency of the corrective measures required
• Conducts complete vessel safety examinations under the treaty requirements of the SOLAS or other international conventions/regulations for foreign flag vessels and vessels within the area of responsibility

Qualifications
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis.

• Review technical drawings of vessels and vessel systems for evaluating compliance with regulations and standard
• Prescribing corrective actions for discrepancies utilizing Marine Information for Safety and Law Enforcement (MISLE) or similar database systems
• Inspect all required navigation, intra-vessel communication, alarm, lifesaving, firefighting, and pollution prevention systems on a vessel to ensure that they are operating properly and in compliance with applicable national and international standards
• Reviews of vessel's plans, safety management systems and operating systems to determine compliance with regulations and applicable standards for foreign flag vessels

I have a combination of graduate level education beyond the first 2 years of progressive graduate study and specialized experience that together meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
